2011 Wharton graduate and 6-foot-6 forward A.J. Astroth, who is attending Faith Baptist School in Brandon as a prep student, has verbally committed to Vanderbilt, he said Monday.
Last season, Astroth led the Wildcats in scoring with 20.5 points per game en route to the Class 6A region final and a 23-6 record. Astroth left Wharton as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,317 career points and was named to the Class 6A All-State Third-Team and Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County First-Team.
Wharton lost to Orlando Dr. Phillips in the region championship, 57-54.
Astroth will join a long list of players signing at Faith Baptist this week: Shawn Smith (Missouri), Mike (Central Florida), former Durant star Andre Nation (James Madison), Dylan Poston (Mercer), Brian Pegg (Stetson), Jakari Bush (Florida A&M), Rasham Suarez (Georgia Southern). Chris Daniels (Georgia Southern).
