Former Tampa Catholic football players Trevor Register and Kimo Vareen, both starters last fall for the Crusaders, have officially returned to Hillsborough County’s public high schools.
Register, a junior, and Vareen, a sophomore, have enrolled this week at Jefferson and Riverview, respectively. Both players began their prep careers at Riverview before attending TC.
Last season, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Register rolled up 592 yards and four touchdowns for the Crusaders, including a 75-yard TD run against Orlando Lake Highland. As a sophomore at TC, Register produced 292 yards rushing and two TDs.
At Jefferson, Register will join a running back group that features Shaquille Speights, a bruising back who last season as a junior led the Dragons in rushing with 845 yards on 130 carries. Register is also known for his power but is also owns breakaway speed once past the line.
“We’re happy to have him,” said Dragons coach Jeremy Earle. “We spread it around here pretty well on offense and have some good ones coming back but I’m sure he (Register) will be able to contribute.”
Vareen, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker for TC, worked his way into the starting lineup and was a solid performer. He is also a standout track and field athlete and last season threw the discus.
Earlier this week, TC’s leading rusher from last fall, Jordan Rich-Rogers, enrolled at Gaither. He had 689 yards and 10 TDs in the 2011 campaign.
