Former Plant High standout golfer Cindy LaCrosse’s run at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship ended Thursday afternoon with a loss in the Round of 32.
Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., posted a 1-up victory over LaCrosse in the 18-hole match at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
LaCrosse, now a senior at the University of Louisville, had advanced to the event’s second round after posting a 9 and 7 victory Wednesday over Iowa’s Pennapa Pulsawath, the largest margin of victory at the tournament through two rounds of match play.
LaCrosse, the Tribune’s Girls Golfer of the Year as a senior at Plant in 2004 and a three-time All-Big East performer at Louisville, looked as though she was going to post another win in the event through 13 holes Thursday. She was 2-up on Lee at the time following birdies at the par-4 11th and par-5 13th, but LaCrosse ran into trouble after that point.
Consecutive bogeys by LaCrosse at 14 and 15 again made the match all square, and Lee then reeled off a birdie at the par-4 17th to go 1-up. Both players then made par at 18 to close the match, giving Lee the win and a spot in the Round of 16.
