Former Jesuit baseball standout Sam Dyson recently was tabbed by Baseball America as the 17th-best college prospect for the 2010 MLB amateur draft.
Dyson, a right-handed pitcher, is now at the University of South Carolina. He went 9-4 with a 5.21 ERA last season for the Gamecocks, throwing a team-best 102 innings. He was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in his first season on the mound at USC (he redshirted in 2007) and owns a career collegiate record of 17-4.
Dyson has twice been selected in the MLB amateur draft, most recently this past summer, when the Oakland Athletics selected him in the 10th round. Dyson and the A’s weren’t able to come to terms, prompting his return to the Gamecocks for his junior season.
Lakeland High’s Yorday Carbera was among the Top 25 high school prospects. Cabrera, a shortstop/right-handed pitcher for the Dreadnaughts, was No. 12.
