Former Armwood High wrestling standout Ruben Perez, who made program history by becoming the Hawks’ first individual state champion, earned junior college All-American honors Saturday by placing seventh at 157 pounds at the 2010 NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament.
Perez, now a sophomore at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa, went 4-2 at the event, which was held at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa. Wrestlers who finish in the top eight at their respective weight earn All-American honors.
Perez, a 2007 Armwood grad, went 50-2 as a high school senior and won the Class 2A 135-pound individual state championship. He remains the only Hawks wrestler to win an individual wrestling title.
