Cosey Coleman, a starter on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive line on its wining Super Bowl squad in 2003 and a former all-Southeastern Conference performer at the University of Tennessee, has taken his first coaching by joining the staff at Middleton High.
Coleman probably could have gone any number of places to start his coaching career, including his college alma mater in Knoxville, Tenn. But as a resident of Tampa with a 9-year-old son here, Coleman said he wanted to stay close to home. More importantly, he said he wanted to coach at a neighborhood school similar to where he spent the early part of his life in New Orleans.
Thanks to a connection of former Hillsborough and Tampa Catholic two-sport star Denard Spann, Coleman met with first-year Middleton coach Alonzo Ashwood. After getting his clearance with the county school district, Coleman became the Tigers’ offensive line coach this week.
