Former Armwood standout Matt Joyce made his Major League Baseball debut Monday night with Detroit during the Tigers’ 6-3 home loss to the Boston Red Sox.
Joyce played right field and finished 0-for-2 with a walk.
Joyce graduated from Armwood in 2002. He went on to play collegiately at Florida Southern, helping the Moccasins win a Division II national championship in 2005. Joyce was a 12th round selection by Detroit in the 2005 MLB draft.
Joyce was hitting .299 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in 28 games with the International League’s Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate, before he was called up Monday.
