Erin Andrews has interviewed virtually every big-time college football coach in every conceivable live situation. However, that’s nothing compared to the pressure she is facing tonight.
“I’ve got to figure where to take the crew out to dinner,” Andrews said.
Andrews returns home to Tampa as part of ESPN’s broadcast crew (Chris Fowler, Craig James and Jesse Palmer) for Thursday’s Pittsburgh-University of South Florida game. It will be USF’s first Thursday night ESPN home game and Andrews’ first in her hometown since joining ESPN as a sideline reporter in 2004.
A Bloomingdale High and University of Florida graduate, Andrews said USF’s 5-0 start proves last year’s success wasn’t a fluke.
“Just the fact to carry over all the success and hype from last year, it’s huge for the program,” Andrews said. “The last thing anyone wanted to see [for USF] was that last year was a fluke.
“When they were No.2 in the nation [last year], I don’t even know where Florida was [the Gators were No.15]. Everyone had a good time with me, ‘Hey, USF is ranked higher than Florida.’ Well, they can say that again this week.”
USF is No.10 and Florida is No.12.
An intern with WFLA, Channel 8 from 1997 to 2000, Andrews remembers covering the early days of USF’s program.
“Back then, when nothing was going on with the Bucs, Lightning, Florida or Florida State, it would be like ‘let’s go see what’s happening with USF’ and we’d head over to the [coaches] trailers,” she said. “I was going to Florida at the time and remember coming back to Tampa and it was strange — no one had any USF football gear.
“But when I came home for Christmas last year, everything had changed. Everyone has the USF gear and there were billboards all over town.”
Arguably the most popular female in sports media — Playboy.com named her America’s Sexiest Sportscaster — Andrews also is the most scrutinized. Columnists have critiqued her outfits and bloggers track her every move. Andrews, 30, said she still loves her job.
“I really enjoy what I’m doing,” Andrews said. “Working last week’s USC-Oregon State game was such a rush. I really enjoy that. People bring up to me about going into entertainment, but it doesn’t have that kind of drama like in sports.
“I’m such a big fan. I love sports.”
Returning home this weekend will allow Andrews to spend time with her family, her golden retriever and, of course, hit a couple of her favorite eateries — La Teresita and Village Inn.
“I always go to Village Inn for breakfast with my dad [Steve],” she said. “I crush the French toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. I’m totally excited for that.”

HILL HEADED TO USF: Pensacola High DT Anthony Hill, who had verbally committed to Florida State last year but didn’t enroll at FSU, told NoleDigest.com that he will enroll at USF in January.
“USF is where I am going to go now,” Hill said. “I feel like they are an up-and-coming and my best friend goes there. It will be cool playing along side him. They showed me a lot of interest throughout this entire process. They always told me how much they wanted me. Even after I initially told them I wasn’t interested they kept in contact with me.
“I talked to Coach [Jim] Leavitt and we’re doing a lot of the technical stuff now like making sure I am able to get admitted there. He wants me to come down for a visit and check out the facilities and everything. I’m set to enroll there in January.”
If admitted into USF in January, Hill (6-4, 301) would be able to participate in spring drills in 2009 and would have four full years of eligibility.

More depth for the D-line next year, with Harris, McClain, Genus, and Grissom getting most of the playing time so far, I think. I wonder if he’ll make it on the field next year. Maybe Leavitt and the coaches can give him a workout program to get him ready for spring drills.

If Andrews has a clue, she’ll take the gang to Antonio’s Pasta Grille on Fowler and 56th Street. Best Italian hands down in Tampa… and they have a dish called Shrimp Garrbo that is out of sight.
To this day… every time I fly back to Tampa, I have to stop in there to try the Shrimp Garrbo. For those that haven’t tried it before… It’s a penne pasta topped with gorgonzola cheese wine sauce, mushroom, aspargus, roasted red peppers, and sauteed shrimp.
I believe certain football coaches for USF have been eating lunch there for quite some time. The place is a nice little secret hideaway for those that know the difference between chain Italian (ahem… Carrabas) and the real deal.

I don’t see what the big deal is with La Teresita. I have eaten there numerous times (both the lunch counter and the sit down area), and every time was a bad experience. I guess you have to hit it on one of the “better” days.
Village Inn, on the other hand, owns my face.

I am just going to be blunt - I heard the hype about Antonio’s for a long time and then decided to give it a try. BLECH! My dad’s side of the family is straight-up hardcore Italiano, and they would have been embarassed by Antonio’s food. The sauce was like what they served in my high school’s cafeteria and the entrees seemed like something out of an “Italian for Dummies” cookbook.
Carrabba’s may be a chain, but you can’t argue with quality.
Can someone let the ESPN crew know that they are welcome at my home for dinner tonight? Thanks

The ultimate Bull evaluator and egomaniac will be in the booth on Thursday night. Yes, I am talking about Craig James.
Last year in the game against Rutgers he kept saying over and over, “we’re here to evalutate this South Florida team and see if they are the NO. 2 team in the nation”.
He was so happy they lost. A certified Bull hater. Let’s see what kind of trash he spews out of his piehole this year!

Am I the only one or can anyone else no stand that guy???

The APR rating is not surprising considering the amount of transfers and players leaving the team. That APR score reflects the talent influx into our program. The people that left the program couldn’t compete for playing time therefore they left. As we begin to upgrade our talent, the C-USA-caliber athletes on our roster will be gone and our APR scores will rise again.

Jason… You must have some share holder stakes in Carrabas. All jokes aside. Why goto a good Italian restaurant and order spaghetti? Diversify your tastes buds. The Garrbo is hands down the best dish I’ve ever had in the place. If you don’t like sauteed shrimp, they’ll do sauteed or grilled chicken… better yet, try a filet mignon with the sauce they use on the Garrbo. It’s awesome.
I’ve done Carrabas as well on the corner of Fowler. The owners there were always pretty cool and the food is good.
Maybe you should take a chance on Antonio’s again. Next time I’m in Tampa, hit me up. I’ll treat you to the Garrbo.
Go Bulls!

JT, you’re dead on about Craig James. He totally has a negative vibe going on when it comes to USF. The Force is definitely not strong with him.

Wow, can you cover more UF grads on the USF blog. It would save me more time then actually going to the blog for UF. Lame story as usual. By the way, Does the trib already have a story produced for next thursday on the mis treatment of Pitt fans by USF?
Suggest removalPor (Brett McMurphy) on October 01, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Frank, glad I was able to save you some time and help with your time management. And, nope, we don’t have a story already produced on the mistreatment of Pitt fans.

So, where are they going to eat Brett? Did you drop any of our suggestions on line to your gal pal that unfortunately got misplaced from Tampa for college and ended up in Gainesville? I’m sure Antonio’s would be more than happy to have them for some of that Garrbo. They are a member of USF Bulls country… think Andrews can handle that fact?

JT: I’ve really disliked Craig James for awhile now, but at least he has us ranked higher than Chris Fowler who will be the play-by-play guy. I usually like Chris Fowler but he has us 14th and only 3 voters have us lower at 15th.
I just feel Craig James doesn’t add much in the way of analyzing. I do like Jesse Palmer, though. And yes, I know where he graduated, but he’s a good analyst.
This game will be an evaluation game for a lot of writers and coaches, though, so I hope we pass the test. It’ll also help Grothe’s heisman chances (potentially) since he has better stats all around than Tebow has right now and most people still have Tebow in consideration (and UF’s SoS is worse).

Terry, whether it’s a “Bulls Country” restaurant or not has nothing to do with it. But, yeah, I think she could handle it. So could Chris Fowler (Colorado), Craig James (SMU) and Jesse Palmer (UF).

I have enjoyed Erin Andrews’ sideline reporting since she was the rinkside reporter for the Lightning. She knows the sports she covers - hockey, football, basketball, baseball - and she is very attractive.
I am surprised all these internet goofballs do not chase her out of the business like other young female sideline reporters.
Do we really want to go back to the sideline reporting of the past like O.J. Simpson? How about today’s modern goofball reporters like that blimp Tony Siragusa?
Give it a rest guys, and show some respect to the ladies. Get off the computer, wipe the Cheetos dust off the keyboard, and get out of your mom’s house for a change.

Brett, what’s the attendance projection? I haven’t seen any updates on ticket sales.
Suggest removalPor (Brett McMurphy) on October 01, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Rob, as of Wednesday night, USF officials are expecting 50,000. I believe the students used their entire allotment, so the stadium will be a little more than 3/4th full.

Is there some reason NOT ONE person has commented on the average SAT scores being the lowest of any of the current Top 25 schools??? Now that’s even more embarrassing than the statistic, if at all possible
Suggest removalPor (See No Evil...) on October 02, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Sorry Smooth i’ll give you only a partial exception, because of your ridiculous reasoning why the scores are so low. Better talent will bring better scores?? PLEASE!!

Alvarado did it to the Bulls again. Can that kid kick? Leavitt, kick that kid of the team. He blew against Rutgers last year and now he blew it again!!!
Suggest removalPor (See No Evil...) on October 03, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Well i really don’t know what to say here…the game pretty much said it all…maybe the Bulls should be ranked around the same as their APR score…if they’re lucky!! Who does Kansas play this week???? Oh no…they play #7 T.Tech…this might be ugly….
Suggest removalPor (See No Evil...) on October 03, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Whew..just doubled checked…it’s Iowa St. Kansas plays…guess USF will get to stay ranked for another week….maybe..
