EAST HARTFORD, Conn. Through one quarter of action at Rentschler Field, USF and Connecticut are tied at 3.
USF struck first to open the game. After the Bulls defense forced a three-and-out on UConn’s opening possession, the offense marched 56 yards in 11 plays and Maikon Bonani capped the scoring drive with a 23-yard field goal to give USF a 3-0 lead at the 9:34 mark.
But the Huskies came right back down the field, holding the ball for nearly the rest of the quarter. UConn marched 81 yards in 16 plays, taking 8 minutes, 59 seconds off the clock, and got an 18-yard field goal from Dave Teggart.
USF’s defense allowed the Huskies to go 3-for-4 on third down on the drive, but came up with a big stop after UConn had first and goal at the Bulls 1.
And the Bulls are threatening now. Marcus Shaw returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to the Connecticut 8. USF has the ball facing second and goal from the 7 when the second quarter begins.
