If University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt still plans on having co-defensive coordinators at USF, he’ll have to do so without Nebraska linebackers coach Mike Ekeler.
Sunday night, Leavitt offered the co-coordinator positions to Ekeler and Iowa State secondary coach Chris Ash. Early Monday afternoon, Ekeler decided he would remain with Nebraska.
Ekeler, 37, had initially interviewed with Leavitt last week, but told the Omaha (Neb.) World Herald on Thursday he was “happy” to be at Nebraska. Still, Leavitt pursued Ekeler a second time after being turned down Sunday by Georgia linebackers coach John Jancek and Colorado secondary coach Greg Brown.
Leavitt is seeking replacements for defensive coordinator Wally Burnham and secondary coach Troy Douglas.
With Ekeler out of the picture, will Leavitt try to pair Ash, 35, with another individual as co-defensive coordinators? Or will Leavitt offer Ash the defensive coordinator position and hire another individual as linebackers coach?

Bret,
Suggest removalHas former co-head coach Kravitz been considered or interviewed? I know he left a few years ago but did he leave under good terms with CJL? Thought he did a good job at the time but didn’t know if he would consider coming back. Isn’t a big part of the difficulty finding a DC is the lack of significant money available to pay these guys? USF is one of the lowest in the Big East in paying their assistants, if I’m not mistaken. Maybe that is why he is looking for two guys that would share responsibilities and pay them less that way….
Por (Brett McMurphy) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Bullguy, I’ve talked to Kravitz and he has not been contacted by Leavitt. When Kravitz left USF for N.C. State, I think Leavitt was surprised by that. I remember Leavitt saying “He had the biggest [assistant’s] office, what else could he want?” When Kravitz was out of work a couple of years later, Leavitt made, let’s just say, a not very flattering offer to Kravitz, who had helped Leavitt from the program’s beginning. Never say never, but I don’t think Leavitt and Kravitz will work together any time in the future.

you don’t know us well enough to call us Cornholers. IF USF can man up and beat NU in Lincoln (or anywhere) then you’ll have the right to call us whatever you want.

Nebraskans; we were ranked #2 more recently than you were, and we are more likely to get ranked #2 again before you do.
We’ll leave your coaches alone if you leave our high school players alone.
Meanwhile, take our recruiting of your coaches for the compliment that it is. We want to recruit from the best.
I doubt we’ll land any of them, though.

I’m glad the Mike Eckler is staying at Nebraska

I highly doubt that your more likely to be ranked “#2” before the huskers are. We’re on our way back up and I guarantee we will have at least 10, if not 11 wins next year

well dan in Tampa congratulations on being #2! and how did that year finish out for you? yeah and how many national championships do u have? oh how many times have u been #1 yeah so shut up about your #2 ranking NO ONE CARES!!!!!!!! and if Nebraska and Usf played nebraska would kick some bull butt so yeah nebraska better

Wow. Patrick O’Rourke, you are correct about your rights. Your comment using the term ‘cornholers’ is spectacular in it’s idiocy and rudeness.
But you are correct, you live in America and you have the right to be as rude and foolish as you desire. So enjoy that freedom! Embrace your rights! Have a nice day!

Nebraska fans, Patrick O’Rourke hasn’t had anything good to say about anything, including USF or it’s fans, so I wouldn’t worry too much about his comments.

Its not classless to want to keep the coaches you have. Its classless to think that they are secure in where they are at. Its okay for the University to throw them out when its right for the University? But not take the initiative to try and better thier career. I agree that if they would stick around, Pelini would take care of them where they are at, but they wouldnt have gotten into coaching if they didnt want to be a head coach at sometime.
Go Big Red!

Try not to ignore my last post, okay?
I apologized and explained it was an unsuccessful attempt at good-natured ribbing - which I should have realized seldom comes across properly in print.
So once again—I’m sorry.

I apologize for my fellow Cornholers. We do tend to be passionate about our football. After all, what else do we have except women’s volleyball and men’s wrestling (shouldn’t that be the other way around?).
Suggest removalI think Mike Ekeler is nuts to turn down a co-dc job in Tampa to remain a linebacker coach in Lincoln, but then I’ve never been to Tampa.
I see one of us is already claiming a sure 10 or 11 wins next season and others are counting the days until the next national championship.
I’ll be thrilled if we do as well next season as we did last season and would be happy with a Big 12 North championship in the next 3 or 4 years.
USF (which previously always meant University of San Francisco to me) has come a long way in a short time.

NV Husker,
Ahem….2 of the 5 were split titles. Go back and look at 1970. The outrights were 1971, 1994, and 1995. If you are going to talk about us, it might as well be right.
As for Mickey Rourke, I didn’t realize USF had a real D1 football program since they play in the Big Least Conference for CFB. Come back and play when you win something.
Suggest removalPor (Dan) on March 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Okay, if I read it right, the 100 year old Nebraska program got a National Championship over a decade ago, and according to ESPN they haven’t been ranked in the top 25 in the last 3 years. Well, at least you have warm weather right now. No? Oh, well then at least your school is located near a nice beach. Not that either, huh? How about some great cities where lots of top fashion models live? Or that most of your female population is hot? None of that? Gosh, then I guess you should CLING TO THE DISTANT PAST WHEN YOUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM USED TO BE GOOD, which none of your current students have ever seen. All of ours have. Come back and talk smack when your team’s done something.
Suggest removalPor (GR Husker) on March 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Dan in Tampa,
Congratulations. I think your post may be up for dumbest post of the year.
“So, Mr. prospective coach, what are you looking for in your next job?”
“Well, let’s see. What do I need in order to apply my skills as a football coach and continue to build my resume for the day when I might get a shot at being a HC myself? I think the list is obvious:
1. A great city where lots of top fashion models live.
2. A nice beach.
3. A mostly hot female population.
4. A student population who has seen their team reach as high as #2 at one point in the football season.
5. Oh yeah, and because we all know football can’t be played in the cold, it has to be warm there.”
You just can’t make this kind of stuff up. Great post.
