Wauchula lightweight Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry will be in the ring again May 21 against Stevie “Lil’ But Bad” Johnston (45-5-1, 18 KOs) on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights series. The bout will be held at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for the U.S. Marines troops stationed at the base and will air live at 9 p.m. ET.
Cherry (23-5-2, 11 KOs) was last in the ring on the Floyd Mayweather Jr-Ricky Hatton undercard, which also featured St. Petersburg super middleweight Jeff Lacy, Dec. 8, 2007 in Las Vegas. Cherry knocked out Wes Ferguson with a heavy left hook in the sixth round.
It was the second time Cherry knocked off Ferguson in six months. In June, Cherry scored a 10-round unanimous decision victory against the Vegas resident.
Johnston, a southpaw from Denver, once held the WBC lightweight title, but lost it to Jose Louis Castillo in 2000. Ring Magazine dubbed the bout the 2000 Upset of the Year. In the rematch three months later, it was ruled a draw after it was determined a judge’s scorecard was incorrectly added. It originally had Johnston winning, 115-114, but the recalculation had it even, 114-114.
The co-feature on the Cherry-Johnston bout will be Freddie Norwood against Johnny Edwards in an eight round fight.
