A few pieces of news from around the NASL for this gloomy Tuesday lunchtime:
Talking with Rowdies head coach Paul Dalglish last night, in addition to being very happy with the regular season schedule, he said that the team expected to announce some more signings in the next few days. With 16 already in the fold, this could possibly complete the squad that will come to training camp starting March 1. Preseason games are also in the works, with some already set up and others still waiting on final confirmation. As has been the team’s policy to this point, those games will all get unveiled at the same time, but could happen wby the end of the week. Dalglish said he was eager to get everything lined up “ASAP”.
Around the league, the Edmonton Drillers are expected to come into the NASL fold later today, with the side expected to start play alongside Atlanta in 2011. There will be more to come on this later, but that will give Canada four professional franchises, with Toronto FC in MLS, and the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps in U.S. Division 2, the Whitecaps making the move to MLS in 2011.
Speaking of Division 2, the league now has a logo to call its own, which can be found within this U.S. Soccer Press Release. What do you think? Seems pretty generic to me, but since it’s a temporary fix until the NASL and USL settle their differences it’s not the worst thing in the world.
Finally, AC St. Louis has another player to go with Steve Ralston, signing hometown product Tim Velten.

That is great news! I can’t wait for more players to be announced and hope the preseason schedule is announced soon too! I wonder if we’ll play any MLS teams.

Rowdies twitter account is saying five more players will be announced today!: http://twitter.com/tampabayrowdies
“...just heard a little rumor the Rowdies are going to announce 5 more players today. Stay tuned!!”
Sort of weird they are reporting rumor since if it’s coming from the team shouldn’t it be fact?!?

Chinese player Long Tan hasn’t officially been announced by the club yet, so expect him to be one of the players in the five.
My expectations for the other four? Looking at the 16 currently signed, a pair of goalkeepers, another defender and another attacker, with maybe one more midfielder to come later to make a squad of 21.

I like Edmonton coming in, NASL Drillers return. Atlanta and Edmonton might be poor replacements for such major-minor teams like Vancouver and Portland, but they are big cities that have the potential to grow into something special.
I’ll give my Rowdies scarf if we DON’T announce a keeper.
We are dying here, give us a keeper!

Thanks for the news Nicholas. I was wondering why Tan wasn’t on the team’s roster list on their site. I am hoping for a keeper, mainly Louis Crayton. He would be a great addition and in my opinion just as, if not more significant, than Ralston. He was on trial with Kansas City as of Jan. 27, so I’m not sure what his status is.

Did you see who Edmonton signed as a coach?

Dwight Lodeweges was recently the head coach for the Dutch premier league’s FC Groningen, FC Zwolle, PSV Eindhoven and NEC Nijmegen. Lodeweges spent 9 years playing in North America including three years with the Edmonton Drillers.
They will be tough come 2011. Awesome!
