One of the toughest wrestling tournaments in the state will be held this weekend in Plant City, where Durant host the 14th annual Cougar Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The 30-team field includes several perennial state powers, including last season’s Class 3A state champion (Kissimmee Osceola) and runner-up (Homestead South Dade), last season’s Class 1A state champion (Fort Myers Riverdale), and last season’s Class 2A state runner-up (Bradenton Manatee) and third place team (Springstead).
Chamberlain, Hillsborough, Jesuit, Sickles, Tampa Prep and Wharton join Durant as Hillsborough County squads competing in the event. Wrestling began today at 3 p.m. The tournament finals are tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Durant is coming off a good showing last week at the Ocala Forest Invitational, where the Cougars finished second in the team standings. Alex Hamm (130 pounds) and Titus Horner (171 pounds) each won individual titles, while Jordan Wellman (140) was a runner-up and Aaron Bryant (145) and TJ Davis (152) each took third.
