Dunn will consider Tampa Bay, among others

Posted Mar 3, 2008 by Roy Cummings

The Bucs have all the criteria Warrick Dunn is looking for in a new team.

Dunn, the former Bucs running back who was officially released by the Falcons on Monday morning, wants to join a playoff contender, and the Bucs fit the bill, according to Dunn’s agent, Jim Steiner.

The problem, at least for the Bucs, is that Indianapolis, Dallas and Denver also fit the bill, and all those teams appear to have some interest in signing Dunn.

It’s still too hard to tell where this is going to go but the early edge probably goes to the Colts, because they are not only a playoff contender but a Super Bowl contender. Not only that but their coach is Tony Dungy is someone whom Dunn obviously played for before jumping to the Falcons in 2002, and he’d probably like to be reunited with him.

By the same token, Dunn would also like to return to Tampa, where he owns a home and remains close to several former Bucs teammates such as Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber. Playing time and, of course, money will play a part in the decision as well.

Stay tuned to TBO.com for updates on the Dunn situation as well as all Bucs-related free agent happenings

Here’s one Bucs fan that hopes we sign him.  He can help us fill a hole and he is a classy guy who only makes headlines for the right reasons.  A breath of fresh air in the NFL nowadays.

It would be nice to see Dunn retire in a Bucs uniform, but he stands a better chance of getting deep into the playoffs with the Colts.

I will write everyday in hopes that someone working for the Bucs actually reads what the fans have to say.  Please do not sign another 30+-year-old back (Garner?).  Pittman would be better than Dunn, but I think Pittman wants out.  We still don’t have to sign Dunn or any other older back.  Wait for the draft.  Also, have the sense to make contracts heavy on the front end so we can enjoy this kind of cap space in the future.  It would be better to pay a player who turns out to be a bust a lot this year than to have to let him impact the cap for years to come.  I don’t really care for what they’ve done so far, but next year could be better.  It shouldn’t be necessary to give such obvious advice, but I think it apparently is.

Well if Dunn wants a contract for more than a year he should choose Tampa. Dungy may not be in Indianapolis after next year.

We should have made a hard run at Burner Turner, and then sign either Hackett, B. Johnson, or J. Walker and call it a day….

I WANT W DUNN AS WELL.  HE WILL EITHER GO WITH US OR REUNITE WITH DUNGY & COLTS..  WE NEED A SOLID CB OR WR.  I SEE B KELLY HASN’T SET-UP ANY VISIT.  HE MIGHT BE BACK IN A BUCS UNIFORM.  STAY PATIENCE BUCS FAN, WE DON’T NEED TO OVER PAY ANY OF THESE GUYS.

Not only that he and Derrick Brooks are the only guys that are classy they are both nice guys as well as the other buccaneers. But Warrick Dunn will help us for sure here in Tampa. I know that he may wants to reunite with Coach Dungy but his best bet is to stay here in Tampa. We all appreciate Dunn a lot and what he has done for us in the past, so hopefully he will make the right move to stay and come back in Tampa. He and Jeff Garcia will be good together on the field. Bring Dunn back he belongs in Tampa not Colts :D

Old players whose numbers have declined rapidly over the past few years should not be signed for sentimental reasons.  Bennett should be better once he learns the system.  Graham is good.  Darby may be getting better and we have the draft.  I guess some of you care more about a player’s sentimental value than his ability to contribute.  If we have to add a running back in free agency, get Chris Brown.  Even with 2 other backs getting more playing time, he put up about 600 yards and had 5 td’s.  Dunn didn’t even get to 1,000 total yards as the featured back.

PLEASE DONT RESIGN HIM. WE WOULD BE BETTER OFF SIGNING SOME ROOKIE LET HIM GROW.

WARRICK IS NOT A FAN FRIENDLY GUY. WE WONT DO ANY COMMUNITY EVENTS SUCH AS FAN FEST OR EVEN TAKE THE TIME SIGN AUTOGRAPHES.

NO to Dunn, TOOO OLD. He had his chance to be on a winning team and he left. If he is not good enough to play for the losing falcons, How is he good enough to play for the division champs? Sign Mike Pittmen, He knows the play book, it will take dunn two yrs to learn it, then he is 35. No deal dunn. Bucs fan since 76

I love Dunn’s character and leadership. I wish him well wherever he ends up. Not sure how well he would fit in here though… Would have to think it over for a bit.

Went to a couple of events with Dunn present when the Falcons trained at Furman. He is not fan friendly and went out of his way not to sign and have association with fans even kids. But the point is we signed Michael Bennett who is the same type of back as Dunn but younger and faster. Let’s get our receive and a strong corner and stop fooling around.

Lets all ask Steve Duemig what he thinks. I mean isn’t he the know all see all when it comes to Bucs football?

I’ve always liked Dunn,  I remember him as a good man, he never got in to trouble and he did help in the community. I do have to agree with some of the others tho he has gotten older and we have Graham who is very good.

Dunn is an improvement over the current corps exactly how?  Clue: he’s available for a reason, and it’s not because of his salary cap hit in ATL.  Dunn hasn’t been relevent for a long time.  Let go of the past, folks.

He would be perfect as the 3rd down back, a la Pittman (who is most likely gone). I doubt they’d break the bank to get him. Why would anyone assume that he’d be anything other than that? He can catch, still has some wheels. Gruden wanted him for the WCO when he first arrived. I think it’s a no-brainer. He hasn’t had many miles due to sharing the load with Alstott, Duckett, et al. No sentimentality involved, really. After Graham and Bennett, umm, Darby? Sign Dunn, draft Mendenhall.

Dunn is too small to be a force in the nfl. Also, he has 11 years worth of football mileage. Skip him and look for a big back the likes of a Brandon Jacobs.
