Dungy spoke to North Texas about Canales

When North Texas head coach Todd Dodge was trying to decide whether to offer former USF offensive coordinator Mike Canales a job on the Mean Green’s staff, one of the people he contacted was former Bucs and Colts coach Tony Dungy.

Dungy gave Canales high marks, as did former Bucs assistant Herm Edwards and UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow.

“All of those guys said that Mike is loyal and has a great relationship with his players,” Dodge told the Denton (Texas) Chronicle-Record after announcing Canales’ hiring Friday.

Canales is looking forward to coaching Dodge’s son, starting quarterback Riley Dodge. Canales compares Riley Dodge to former USF quarterback Matt Grothe.

As for his new job, Canales hopes his experience pays off at North Texas: “What I am going to bring is the experience that I have gained over the years at NC State, where we beat Notre Dame, at Arizona and at South Florida, where we were ranked [No. 2] in the country,” Canales said. “I can bring the experience of beating Florida State. I have coached in a lot of big games.”

I think the kid will enjoy being coached by Canales.

Scott, good reporting.  I am glad the negative reporting of the past is gone.  Just give me the facts as you know him.  I really appreciate it.

Thanks for checking out the blog rizman…dan, I’m guessing Dungy and Edwards got to know Canales from their days in Tampa together…Plus, Dungy spoke to USF players a few days before Holtz was hired…the coaching world is a very small world in some ways; if a coach stays around long enough, connections start to build pretty quickly.
