Don’t Count On Walker Deal

Posted Feb 22, 2008 by Roy Cummings

The more we look into this talk of a possible trade between the Bucs and Broncos for wideout Javon Walker. the more we’re convinced it probably won’t happen.

First off, the Broncos have supposedly been offering Walker up to just about anybody who will answer their phone calls and you know the Bucs will answer any call from anyone about anybody. That’s how they wound up getting Jake Plummer.

Second, it doesn’t make much sense for the Bucs or anyone else to work a deal for Walker, because the likelihood is the Broncos will refuse to pay him the $5.4 million option bonus he’s due and he’ll soon become a free agent anyway.

Finally, there are a lot of receivers expected to come on the market next Friday when the free-agency signing period begins, including Bernard Berrian of the Bears, D.J. Hackett of the Seahawks and Donte’ Stallworth of the Patriots.

Anyone of them would be just as good a pickup, if not better, than Walker, who is probably the most talented of the group, but that knee injury he had was his second in three years.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the Bucs are looking primarily for speed. Walker fits the bill but maybe not as much as Stallworth, Hackett or Devery Henderson of the Saints.

In other Bucs related news, the New York Times reported today that the Patriots practice of taping the signals of opposing coaches dates back to the very beginning of Bill Belichick’s reign as Pats coach.

That would be 2000 and the Pats first game of the 2000 season was against the Bucs. According to the Times report, a former Pats player says the Pats taped the Bucs signals that day.

If that’s the case they didn’t do a very good job of interpreting them. The Bucs won that game, 21-16, at New England.

but the last time the bucs played the pats(not counting pre-season)the pats blew out the bucs, so maybe they did learn something from those tapes

Hey, I was at that game in 2000.  What a bunch of rude, sore losers up there.  They’re the worst!

Javon Walker isn’t the answer.  We need a playmaker that’s going to move the chains and even play decoy for Galloway and Clayton.  Donte Stallworth or Chad Johnson sounds pretty good right about now.  Yes, CJ is flamboyant, yes, he likes the spotlight as well, but he moves the chains and is a proven threat. I don’t know why the Eagles or the Patriots would let Stallworth go, but that’s ok…bring’em to Tampa.  I know we need to address other concerns on both sides of the ball, but this pick-up would be a good step towards proving we are still one of the elite teams in the NFC period.  We also need another threat at RB…ala’ Michael Westbrook or Warrick Dunn.  Maybe the draft will provide a diamond…...

Some of us veteran Buc Fans, (I’ve been watching them since 1976), pay absolutely NO attention to any of these scuttlebutt rumors.  We’re waiting anxiously for draft day.  We look at and think long term, (within reason.)  We don’t get all wet about FA players, realizing that if they’re let go by another team that isn’t in cap trouble, they’re probably on the downside of their career.  What the Bucs need for the coming year is: help at WR, CB and DL, (pass rush), with possibly one Veteran TE, who doesn’t cost the farm.  K?  It wouldn’t hurt to draft a center, who can play guard too.
