TAMPA—Joel Glazer’s warning that home blackouts are a real possibility this fall spawned a wild rumor Monday regarding the future of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And it won’t be the last.
An unsubstantiated report was posted Monday on the web site “Pro Football Talk,’’ speculating that the Bucs are a likely candidate to play at least one home game overseas on a regular basis, part of an overall NFL plan to galvanize European fans by having one or two clubs routinely playing regular-season games across the Atlantic.
The report also suggested the Bucs could eventually end up re-locating from Tampa Bay to Europe on a permanent basis, playing home games at London’s Wembley Stadium.
The Glazer family owns both the Buccaneers and Manchester United, a Premier League power that boasts of being the world’s most popular soccer club. The Bucs faced the Patriots at Wembley last October, sacrificing a home date at Raymond James Stadium.
The Bucs declined to comment on the unsourced report.
The league has been sending clubs overseas on a rotating basis and the 2010 game at Wembley will match the 49ers against the Broncos.
There is some sentiment in the league for singling out a few franchises to make regular trips to Europe in an effort to build a fan base for a particular team, but NFL owners will be reluctant to sacrifice home games on a routine basis.
A 3-13 record and a struggling economy has made it challenging for the Buccaneers to generate season-ticket sales for next season, but no NFL game at Raymond James Stadium has failed to sell out since the facility opened in 1998.
