Forum: Talk Rays
|
One quick Saturday afternoon note of interest on what is expected to be a quiet weekend for the Rays:
NPB Tracker translates a report from Sponichi that says former Rays reliever Scott Dohmann is close to a deal with the Hiroshima Carp. (I ran the linked page through Google Translate for my own amusement, but it was such a mess I had very little idea what was going on.)
The 30-year-old reliever beat out Grant Balfour for the final spot in the Rays’ bullpen coming out of spring training (a decision that made sense at the time given how each was pitching) and went 2-0 with a 6.14 ERA in 12 appearances for the Rays before being sent out. He cleared waivers and spent the rest of the season at Durham, going 0-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 20 saves in 33 appearances.
This could be a nice move for Dohmann, whose numbers at the Triple-A level were pretty solid. Gary Glover went over to Japan a few years back and was well-paid for his services compared to what he would have gotten on a minor-league deal here. Good luck to Scott, a stand-up guy, and his family.

It’s a shame that he has to go overseas to earn a living. I find it hard to believe that he couldn’t find a home here in the States. I’m happy for him. I hope he blows up and gets treated like a king and doesn’t even have to come back.
