Does Raheem Morris Have To Cut Joey Galloway?

Posted Feb 3, 2009 by Anwar S. Richardson

Updated Feb 3, 2009 at 08:27 AM

Now that the Super Bowl is over, it’s time for us to shift our focus back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We are all caught up on the offseason news, and hopefully players who did not like former coach Jon Gruden are done airing their grievances and everyone can move forward.

Speaking of the future, here is a realistic scenario new coach Raheem Morris will have to address.

Bucs WR Joey Galloway had been very productive prior to this season. Galloway had three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and was Tampa Bay’s main offensive threat. He sustained an injury last season, and even though he claimed to be healthy, Galloway was barely utilized. He finished with 13 receptions for 138 yards.

We all expect Tampa Bay to re-sign WR Antonio Bryant, but Galloway’s future remains unclear.

Not only is he 37-years old, but Galloway was Gruden’s favorite player (at least until last season). Galloway did not practice much during previous training camps and rarely participated in practices throughout the week because Gruden liked him so much.

However, Morris will need to establish his presence early, and often the easiest way for coaches to show players who is in charge is by cleaning house. There is no way players will take Morris seriously if he shows favoritism in his first season, especially considering veterans like Derrick Brooks always participate in practice when healthy.

So the question I’m throwing out there to Bucs fans this morning is: “Does Raheem Morris need to cut Joey Galloway?”

cval, that’s mighty big of you.  I will accept your invitation.  The single biggest need appears to be a QB for the future.  I would put WR and NT 2nd and 3rd.  Then probably CB or RB.  Finally, we could use another DE and K.  K may be pretty important, too.  I want Gano.  He could be P and K, at least for long F.G.s and kickoffs.  McCown or Johnson could solve the QB problem.  We will need our new O.C. to determine if either could solve that problem.  A new LT?  Penn is a pretty good pass blocker and not too bad with the run.  That would be a luxury.  He should get better as a 3rd year starter, too.

Keep in mind that if Gano can be K and P, that opens a roster spot.  I don’t know of anyone else to do that in recent history, but it’s worth a shot.  He may wear out quicker, but he’ll give us an advantage for at least 6-10 years, assuming he worked out and stayed with us.  That would easily be worthy of a 4th or 5th rounder.  I’ve never been so big on a K.  Bidwell had a bad game against Oak., but was fine on the year.  Bryant can’t get touchbacks and can’t make much over 40 anymore.  That really hurts our team.

Sorry guys and gals I am kind of going of off topic for a second.  We definitely need to pick up free agents and draft correctly, but dang the Glazers need to spend some money.  When they first came on board we were one of the top money spenders in the league, now we are in the bottom half.  Ever since they acquired the soccer team they have left the Bucs hanging.  What are we $40+ million under the cap?  Last year $30+.  I wonder where the extra cash is going.  (In there pocket or to help pay for the soccer team).  Gruden was limited, I hope the new coach doesn’t have this problem or we’ll see a bunch of old low cost players on this team.

HelpTampa you are right.  The Glazers need to focus / spend more on the Bucs as much as the title winning soccer team.  Joey costs about $2 million this year – very manageable.  He maybe losing a step but he may play like a pro bowler in his last year. wink  Raheem has seen Galloway in practice and knows if he can play or not (just like Brooks, Barber, etc).  You definitely need the old with the new to form a unified cohesive team.  Let’s drink a bunch of beer, party like rock stars, pray and win some freak n’ games.

I’m confused. Last year the Tribune and pretty much everyone else in town was reporting that Gruden was treating Galloway like dirt because he was barely playing while Antonio Bryant was racking up big numbers. Now you’re saying he treated him so well that it caused problems in the locker room.

Which one is it? Or are you all talking out of both sides of your mouth as usual?

This is an extremely useless article, question, debate - whatever it is.

I’m sorry I’m even posting to this.

Joey “Guns” Galloway should be handled no different than any other player.

He needs to hit camp and prove it.  Truth of the matter is that his legs have always been better than his hands - if the legs are not there anymore, it should be a much easier decision.

I dunno, he’ll probably hurt his groin as usual.

Globoball – Come on you know when he was catching all them balls you were cheering like everybody else.  It’s amazing how people forget how someone helps your so called team.  Be a fan.  You know he still has speed and probably is super fresh since he didn’t play last season.  If he has lost a step or can’t compete then Raheem will figure that out.  He’s proven he has some hands, give the guy a chance.  I bet you think DB and the other cast cant help either.  We have some serious bandwagoners here.  Support your team and players.

Speed can not be taught, but if you can’t make it threw practice forget a 16 game season and playoffs. PaperTiger needs to showup in practice or play golf with Gruden and hangout @Hooters!

Nick Oviedo, he’s gone! Why the hate, still?

Gruden kept a secret about Galloway for months, he had a broken foot!  I believe that Galloway should go thru training camp and preseason before any judgement be made on his future!  I don’t believe that A. Boldin is a fit for the Bucs, check his actions in and after the NFC playoff game!

Flag Foul,
I am a fan and readily acknowledge Joey Guns’ major contribution in past years.

But objectively, Galloway’s skill is his speed NOT his hands. He is not the WR that is going to “make” a play with his hands like a Larry Fitzgerald,  Calvin Johnson, or Houshmandzadeh. But if his speed gets him open and if the ball is right there for him (which it is usually not with the Bucs QB’s) he is dependable.

If his legs are no longer there, that moves him closer to mediocrity - and probably retirement, not on a team that is rebuilding.

Unless your in complete denial that we are in rebuilding mode, it is a no brainer to let Galloway go.

Por (ref813) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

JDouble, complete rebuilding mode?  First of all, the Dolphins only had one win last year and then made the playoffs.  ATL did about the same.  We only really need a QB, WR, DT, and maybe a RB to have a pretty good team.  Our D is younger at most positions.  The O line is in place.  Between the draft and free agency, we should be able to fill our needs.  I’m not saying we will have a winning season for sure, but anything is possible these days.  Only Detroit and a few other teams just can’t figure it out.  I think the Bucs have grown out of that crowd.

We are not in the same boat. We do not have a
strong core. Wanna know why? The last time a first
round pick panned out for us was Warrick Dunn in 97’
It’s too early to tell what we have from the last
three years with Talib, Josephs, and Adams….but all
three look promising. Before that though, if you look
back, we either had no 1st round pick, or our first
round pick was a bust every year from 98-2005. That is
why we are in the boat we are in.

We are leaning on our old heroes because we don’t have
anyone to take thier place. You brought up the Dolphins,
well they finally cut loose thier old heroes like
Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor….and look at them now.

So…

I think we really need to have at least 2 strong drafts to get
a solid core of young players. You cut these old guys
like Brooks, Barber, Dunn, Carter, Wilkerson, Garcia,
Dunn….what do we have left? A pretty good and young
offensive line and that’s about it. We need a franchise
QB, we need to resign Bryant and get another young
taleneted WR in FA. We need another RB. We need an
elite CB to take over for Barber, we need an elite LB
to take over for Brooks, we need an Elite DT and DE.
We don’t have ANY elite players on either side of the
ball and that just doesn’t get it done in the NFL.

Williams and Clayton have been a bit injury prone.  Clayton may do better under a new coach.  We know now that he and Gruden didn’t get along.  Maybe, that affected his play.  That seems to be a common theme these days.  Williams had a good first year for the most part and looked good in his last game.  One or both of them could turn out o.k.  We have 2 D line coaches, now.  If they can’t get Adams going, he may not be great.  He’s not bad though.  Joseph is in the pro bowl, so I would say he’s doing pretty well.  Talib looked good.  He was tied for most ints and had like 10 passes defensed in limited action.

Por (ref813) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Our LBs should be good.  Brooks is the only one who is getting a bit old.  The safeties are good.  CBs are o.k.  D line will need a bit of work.  If we keep Bryant, WRs will be looking better, but definitely need work.  RBs depend on injuries, really.  If Williams can make it back again, Smith can stop fumbling, and Graham can get back to his old form, we’ll be in pretty good shape.  O line is good.  TEs are good.  That leaves QB.  None of us really knows what’s going to happen there.  A good WR and QB could make the team look a lot better.

Por (ref813) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

We don’t have any elite players?  Ruud?  Phillips and Jackson make a pretty impressive duo.  Some of our O linemen are pretty close to elite.  Bryant may be on his way.  Talib, too.  June didn’t make much noise, but he had good numbers.  Smith and Stevens are pretty impressive TEs.  Smith is an elite returner.  If you threw in Boldin or T.J., Oak.‘s CB, and Cassel or some other QB I haven’t heard about along with Haynesworth or another great DT, we would be pretty impressive.  $40M can go a long way.

DoubleJ, I just realized that out of Dungy’s 6 1st rnd picks 5 were busts(Upshaw, J Green, Bugger, & K Walker) and out of Grudens 7 1st rnd picks he had 2 busts(clayton and Caddy). Hmm interesting just never realized that. It would be interesting to see difference in overall picks.
I do disagree with the old defensive stamp though. We have alot of young defensive players.

Por (JDouble) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Come on now, you gotta face the facts. Clayton is a bust. Caddie was amazing in his first 3 games and then big time bust. When considering the RB situation, Caddie shouldn’t even be included. Great kid, but he’s done.

I wouldn’t say the CBs are ok either. Talib looks like he might be great and will at least be good enough to be the 2nd CB, but Buchanon sucks and Barber is old. We need to sign Nnamdi Asomugha in FA, then keep Barber in a diminished role.

Speaking of FA…Bart Scott would be a great replacment for Brooks, and our number one goal should be to sign Haynesworth. Our biggest need is DT and we have the most cap room so this should happen.

Por (JDouble) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Other than Bart Scott, Albert Haynesworth, and Nnamdi Asomugha…we should be able to pick up a good WR in FA. There’s Devry Henderson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Shaun McDonald, Reggie Williams, and possibly Anquan Boldin.

Hey ref, we have quite a few good young players, but I’ll stand by my claim that we have no elite players. Your right though, if we added elite players like Haynesworth or Houshmandzateh we would be better…but that’s cause they are elite players and elite players make everyone on the team better. :p

Por (ref813) on February 04, 2009 (Suggest removal)

jdouble, alright, I’ll settle for this:  just give Ruud elite status.  Can you throw me one bone?  As I watched the numbers in the run up to pro bowl voting, I noticed that he was the most complete LB.  Beason and Willis are probably as good, but I wouldn’t say better than Ruud.  There are over 32 MLBs in the league.  Doesn’t being number 1, 2, or 3 make you elite?  Other than his early errors, Smith was also an elite returner.  When you make the pro bowl and you aren’t older, chances are that you’re one of the best.  Yes, I would like to add those elite players.  2 or 3 of them would go a long way.
