Does Raheem Morris Have To Cut Joey Galloway?

Posted Feb 3, 2009 by Anwar S. Richardson

Now that the Super Bowl is over, it’s time for us to shift our focus back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We are all caught up on the offseason news, and hopefully players who did not like former coach Jon Gruden are done airing their grievances and everyone can move forward.

Speaking of the future, here is a realistic scenario new coach Raheem Morris will have to address.

Bucs WR Joey Galloway had been very productive prior to this season. Galloway had three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and was Tampa Bay’s main offensive threat. He sustained an injury last season, and even though he claimed to be healthy, Galloway was barely utilized. He finished with 13 receptions for 138 yards.

We all expect Tampa Bay to re-sign WR Antonio Bryant, but Galloway’s future remains unclear.

Not only is he 37-years old, but Galloway was Gruden’s favorite player (at least until last season). Galloway did not practice much during previous training camps and rarely participated in practices throughout the week because Gruden liked him so much.

However, Morris will need to establish his presence early, and often the easiest way for coaches to show players who is in charge is by cleaning house. There is no way players will take Morris seriously if he shows favoritism in his first season, especially considering veterans like Derrick Brooks always participate in practice when healthy.

So the question I’m throwing out there to Bucs fans this morning is: “Does Raheem Morris need to cut Joey Galloway?”

So the players get to decide how long they start now?  We already lost a coach partially because of players’ opinions.  I guess we might as well let them run the team.  They know what’s best, right?  We’ll pay everyone $10M.  They can practice once a week and they can be the worst team in NFL history, too.  Barber and Brooks still think they can start.  We’ll see in the fall if either is capable of evaluated himself objectively, assuming both start.  Brooks is one of my favorite players.  That doesn’t mean he should never retire.  I was worried when Quarles retired.  Have you heard of Ruud?  I’m not worried anymore.

Brooks will retire as a Buc before he’ll be a back-up.  That’s why you sound like you would let him play forever.  That would be idiotic. lol.

LOL!!! The older players can only last a little longer by taking designer (undetectable) roids and extend there career for a couple more years.  “Just kidding” if they add value to the team and we can keep them at a low cost I say we keep them.  Limit there play to keep them fresh and possibly move them into different positions / roles.  Ref813 – it does look like the players and also the “FANS” had something to do with Grudens demise.  I hope it doesn’t bite us in the A**.  We probably should have given Gruden one more year – Raheem wasn’t going anywhere or even going to be picked up by anyone.  If Gruden did have a bad season than they should have made the change.

Are you kidding me?  Galloway isn’t even one of the top 25 WRs in the league today, let alone one of the best ever.  He’s never had great hands.  He was just fast.  I say keep him if he can still play.  We’ll have Bryant, who may be a top 20 WR.  Since you tuned in a bit late, the fan favorites are Brooks, Ruud, and maybe Barber.  It’s hard to call anyone on O a favorite because we have so much turnover there.  I guess Galloway would be one of the favorites on O, just not the whole team.
