Plant’s won seven-straight games against Alonso, including the previous three by an average of 41 points. But the Panthers are preparing for a different Ravens team Thursday night – one that is enjoying its best season since 2003.
Alonso (5-1) is coming off its first loss of the season, a tough 9-7 loss to Plant City. The Ravens defense held the Raiders, who were averaging 44 points a game, to its lowest output of the season.
“They’re no pushovers. They’re 5-1 and playing really well,’’ Plant quarterback James Few said. “They’re not the Alonso team of the past that we put up large numbers against. We’re really looking forward to this game because it potentially puts us in the playoffs. It’s everything we’re working for.’’
If Alonso wins, and Wharton loses, they win the 8A-6 district championship, the first district title since 2006. If Plant wins, and Bloomingdale loses to Wharton, the Panthers would clinch their seventh-straight district title.
“It’s obviously a tribute to what the past Plant players have done in the past,” Few said. “Coach Weiner always says we stand on the shoulders of giants. When he says that, he’s not only talking about the winning teams, but also that first year (2004) that he was here and the groundwork that they laid and the values and morals that we carry with us.’’
