TORONTO David Price set the club record for strikeouts in a game this afternoon with 14 against the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
James Shields and Scott Kazmir had shared the record at 13 prior to today.
Price left after the seventh inning, having thrown 111 pitches. He allowed only three hits – all singles and two walks. He turned a 6-0 lead over to Brandon Gomes.
Price’s first seven outs and nine of the first 10 were strikeouts.
It wasn’t until Price walked Mike McCoy and got Yunel Escobar to fly out to right field to start the sixth inning when the Jays final went two plate appearances without striking out at least once.
The sixth inning was the only inning in which Price did not record a strikeout.
He fanned Kelly Johnson to start the seventh to tie Shields and Kazmir then got Jose Molina two batters later to set the team record.
