Robinson head football coach Mike DePue received a standing ovation from the crowd at Thursday’s 41st annual National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame High School Coaches Award Luncheon.
There was a special guest standing up for DePue as he received the 2009 Billy Turner Coach of the Year Award - his mother Marianne, who was in town from Maine. She was the first person DePue thanked when he accepted his award.
“She’s one tough old lady,” DePue said.
DePue, who also won the award in 2003, was honored for turning around a football program that went 1-9 two years ago, 2-8 last year to an 8-2 regular-season record and appearance in the state semifinals this season. Robinson’s football team was also recognized with the West Coast Officials Association’s Sportsmanship Award. Armwood received the association’s Hospitality Award.
Hillsborough’s Ken Russell was recognized as the 2009 Roland Acosta Assistant Coach of the Year.
