An interesting story here out of Minnesota on the struggles of Delmon Young. While the Rays are getting outstanding performances from Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett - two of the principals in the trade involving Delmon last year - Young has struggled.
Everybody deals with adversity in their career but this is Young’s first real on-field bout with that. He has, of course, had well-chronicled woes off the field but he has always been able to produce between the lines. His propensity for chasing bad pitches appears to have caught up with him though. If I were a pitching coach, I’d fine anyone who threw him anything in the strike zone. Until he learns some plate discipline and self-control, he’ll struggle.
Perhaps this little episode will drive that point home. He certainly is in the place he needs to be right now though. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is considered one of the game’s best teachers. Delmon, clearly, still has a lot to learn.
