GAINESVILLE — Florida’s athletic department has finalized a deal with the All-American Football League to allow the startup league to stage three games at Florida Field next spring. The league’s Florida team will play its other two home games at a site to be determined.
The AAFL is the latest in a string of leagues attempting to cash in on the nation’s collective football withdrawal. The AAFL’s gimmick is playing in college towns and stocking rosters with players from the host school or schools near it. Also, each player must have a bachelor’s degree.
The AAFL will hold a press conference in Gainesville on Wednesday to announce the coach of the Florida team. Danny Wuerffel, Shane Matthews, Fred Weary, Travis McGriff and Chris Doering will be among the former Florida players in attendance.
Does that mean that all those guys will be suiting up for the Florida team? Probably not, though some may. After covering one of the league’s tryouts in July, it seemed pretty apparent that the bulk of the league’s rosters will be filled by players cut from NFL training camps.

The AAFL is definitely an interesting concept. Getting major universities like UF to allow them to use their facilities is great for the exposure. Hopefully it will be entertaining, and will compel some former players to head back to school to finish their degrees.
