Day of contrasts for the Glazers

TAMPA—For the Glazer family, the differences were like night and day.

Just hours after the Buccaneers announced Sunday’s home game against the Steelers would be blacked out locally, team co-chairman Bryan Glazer joined other members of his family Thursday night to celebrate the opening of the Glazer Children’s Museum in downtown Tampa.

At the donor gala, Bryan was joined by his mother, Linda, his brother, Avi, and his only sister, Darcie, who was instrumental in driving a $21 million project that will provide countless hours of fun and information to kids for years to come.

“It exceeds my expectations,’’ Darcie said. “It’s colorful and gorgeous and there’s so much to do here. Kids are going to have a blast.’‘

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio was in attendance, along with Bucs coach Raheem Morris and GM Mark Dominik.

Although the Glazer family contributed $5 million toward the museum project, Tampa Bay’s owners have found themselves criticized for not embracing the community and taking a frugal approach in operating their NFL franchise. Some fans wonder why the Glazers didn’t simply buy up the remaining unsold tickets for Sunday’s matchup to avoid a blackout.

“People will look back and see the things we’ve done,’’ said Bryan Glazer. “I’m not worried about whether everyone likes me or doesn’t like me. We’re the team owners. We’re never going to be loved, but our family goes to bed thinking that we give back. We’re proud of what we do.’‘

On Saturday, all six Glazer children are expected to be on hand for the official opening of the museum.

“This is the real side of the Glazer family,’’ Darcie said. “We’re all about family and kids. I’m very involved in the Glazer Family Foundation and it’s not about the credit. We give away free glasses, free backpacks and all the talk is really not important to us. We’d rather just help everybody. We know that we’re really helping people ... and they know.’‘

If it’s not about the credit, why is the Glazer name emblazoned on the front of the museum building?

Just curious.
