Wade Davis has been voted the July recipient of the Gillette presents American League Rookie of the Month Award.

Davis becomes the first pitcher to win the award this season, and just the fourth Rays player in history to win the award, joining Rocco Baldelli (April 2003; May 2003); Damon Hollins (May 2005); and Evan Longoria (June 2008).

Davis led all rookies and was tied for second in the majors with four wins during July, posting a 4-0 record with a 3.03 ERA in five starts.  In 32.2 innings pitched, the 24-year-old right-hander surrendered 11 earned runs on 30 hits with nine walks and 18 strikeouts.  On July 19th at Baltimore, Wade tossed a season-high 8.0 innings, permitting seven hits and one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts in the 8-1 victory.  On July 30th, Davis held the A.L. East-rival New York Yankees to two runs and four hits over 7.0 innings of work, leading Tampa Bay to a 3-2 victory at Tropicana Field.

The Lake Wales, Florida native has recorded victories in a career-best four consecutive starts, yielding two earned runs or less in each of the performances.  Davis, who is 9-9 with a 4.21 ERA on the season, leads A.L. rookie pitchers in wins and opponents batting average (.257), and ranks second in ERA, games started (20), innings pitched (115.1) and strikeouts (75).  His nine victories rank fifth on the Rays all-time rookie list behind Rolando Arrojo (14 in 1998), Jeff Niemann (13 in 2009), Scott Kazmir (10 in 2005) and David Price (10 in 2009).

Other rookies to receive votes were Minnesota Twins third baseman Danny Valencia (.453, 1 HR, 6 2B, 11 RBI); Detroit Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson (.314, 7 2B, 4 3B, 6 RBI); Davis’ Rays teammate Reid Brignac (.259, 4 HR, 11 RBI); and Chicago White Sox first baseman Dayan Viciedo (.348, 2 HR, 6 2B, 6 RBI).
