DETROIT As expected, the Rays announced after their 6-3 victory against the Tigers tonight that they’re placing rookie starting pitcher Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder and recalling top prospect Jeremy Hellickson to pitch tomorrow night.
Davis is 9-9 with a 4.45 ERA. He joins fellow starting pitcher Jeff Niemann, who was moved to the 15-day DL before the game with the same problem.
Maddon said after the game the Rays haven’t decided whether Andy Sonnanstine will make a second start for Niemann when his turn comes up Saturday at home against the Orioles. Because the Rays have a day off Thursday, David Price could pitch Saturday. Price earned his club-record 15th victory Monday night.
