Darby Days

Posted Aug 10, 2007 by Scott Brown

Updated Aug 10, 2007 at 09:55 PM

A lot of observers felt the Bucs got a steal by picking up Ken Darby well into the second day of the draft. The rookie from Alabama is making those people look pretty knowledgable tonight, ripping off some solid fourth-quarter runs, albeit against the Patriots’  benchwarmers.

It makes you wonder: would Darby lay the paving block for Cadillac Williams, an Auburn product, or vice versa??

The very notion might digust a few, but it will probably happen before long.

Darby looks like the real deal: a prototype NFL back, low center of gravity, a burst of speed and hits the hole hard and fast.  Cadillac may be traded in for a ford.

Darby looked like the real deal. If Caddy falters Gruden can utilize the quick hook now. Caddy better realize that if he wants to remain a starter he must produce. Caddy must start running to day light. He is thinking too much. Darby looks like a natural.

Caddy is the real deal. Remember he started out as the most productive back in the history of the NFL. You know shoes and gloves in the HOF!! Dont disagree that the “NOW” feeling in the NFL looms large but wait and see and you will be very pleased with the results. Caddy hits 1100 yds and 13 TDs this season.

I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Caddy. He’s shown he can perform at a high level in this league, and more than just one game. He just has yet to do it for 16 games. I’m actually encouraged by the versatility of this back field; B.J. Askew is a true Fullback, Williams and Darby are true tailbacks, and Graham and Pittman can play either. Any of them, other Askew, could perform in a single-back set. The number of options for looks in back field alone is very intriguing.

this is what annoys me about fans. Caddy struggles last year now every one is humpin on darby after 1 game. He had a great game yes but rememebr it was against the patriots 2nd and 3rd teamers who will be picking up the local neighborhoods garbage in 3 weeks. caddy is the real deal remember that. he did get his gloves put int he HOF already remember?? and you same people were “YAY I LOVE CADDY” now look what you are saying…. he struggled last year because we had a rookie QB starting and defense aimed at shutting caddy down not to mention the injuries on the o-line. Players and coaches are given such a short window to perform well until fans who dont know much about sports jump on their back and want someone else new playing or coaching.

I think the Bucs could be onto something.  Darby is not here to replace Caddy.  I think he could alternate some with Caddy so we always have fresh legs in the game.  Kind of like Caddy and Ronnie Brown did at Auburn.

I also feel like the Bama-Auburn angle will provide spirited competition.  Caddy needs someone with some pop to sub for him.  It takes the pressure off of him.  He no longer has to be the savior for the Bucs.

Hey Carroll, quit lumping all Buc fans in your Hall of Shame.  You’d be surprised how many fans on this blog actually know what they’re talking about.  As to Darby running all over 2nd and 3rd teamers, this is the NFL. What’s impressive about Darby is: he slipped to the 246th pick in the draft and ran like a first rounder. True this is pre-season; but don’t forget: it’s the NFL preseason and not Powder Puff foosball preseason.  This is the Crème de la Crème of America and the speed of the game is something these rookies has never before seen.  No one is throwing the Cadillac under the bus YET; but he looked really bad last year, injured or not.  He needs to step his game up or Darby and Pittman will replace him.

Doesn’t Ernest Grahm always lead the in yarded in preseason? Can Darby play QB? or middle LB?

Hey Harris,
Lets just cut to the point and “throw caddy under the bus” now so we can give a 7th rounder the starting job lol. since he was so impressive in one preseason game against 3rd stringers.

answer me this what RB in the NFL would have done anything last year with the bucs when the o-line didnt block and there were 8 guys in the box constantly? thanks for proving my point from my last post and thanks for having faith in your team you are a true fan.

Now, now Caddy is the man. Draby looked good, and so did Grahm. Maybe this means the O-line is finally opening up some holes.
I think we should find away to keep all of them. Maybe if Pittman does move to Fullback we can keep the before mentioned three at running back.
