USF quarterback B.J. Daniels is busy preparing to face Rutgers’ blitzing defense on Thursday night, but he took the time to answer a couple of questions about his basketball future on Monday.
Does he still plan to play basketball this season?
“I’m not thinking about it right now, but yes, I am,’’ Daniels said.
Does he stay in contact with his basketball teammates?
“I see them around campus and things like that. Other than that, no,’’ Daniels said.
So, for those who have asked whether Daniels will continue his basketball career following his breakout season in football, there you go.
After Monday’s basketball practice, here is what USF basketball coach Stan Heath had to say about Daniels continuing his basketball career:
“He is a good basketball player, but I think he’s nuts,’’ Heath said. “I think he should should flat-out stick to football. He’s an outstanding quarterback who’s got a bright future, and I’d hate to see anything happen on the basketball court that slows that down. But I know he can play basketball, and if he just spent time playing basketball, he would be a terrific basketball player.
“Who knows what’s going to happen, but I’m hoping his head is totally on these football games he’s got coming up, because he’s got big ones and we need those wins.’‘
As a true freshman in basketball, Daniels played sparingly for the Bulls last season, appearing in 19 games and averaging just 2.8 minutes per contest.
With Heath’s roster stocked deeper this year, Daniels may have a more difficult time finding playing time as a backup guard.
Regardless, Daniels won’t turn his attention to basketball until after football season ends, so we’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for asking the BBall questions. Obviously I didn’t think he’d go in depth on the matter, but I was interested what his thoughts were.
I’m actually excited to see him on the court and hope he picks it up a little during Basketball season.
Track down Stan Heath if you can about the subject. I’m suer you could get a little more insight on the matter especially considering the nice influx of talent to the basketball team. What kind of impact does heath see in BJ for the season?

Barring a lot of injuries, it is hard to see how he would get any playing time at all, except perhaps a minutes or two occasionally of mop up. But if he enjoys it and it keeps him in shape, maybe it isn’t so bad, but is it taking time he could be devoting to FB?

Hey guys, I’m a newbie to the beat, but it’s pretty obvious what’s going on here. Once football season ends, if Daniels wants to practice with the basketball team to stay in shape, they’ll probably make room for him.
But his future is football and everyone knows that. I’m guessing Coach Heath or Coach Leavitt will have a heart-to-heart with B.J. once the football seasons ends and try to convince him to forget about hoops for now.
It will be important for him to be involved in spring football from start to finish since he is the starting QB now and I have a feeling he’ll see that.

If BJ gets hurt playing BB, where he is a backup player and used in meaningless time only, there goes his scholarship and possible NFL chance. Typically, basketball players in high school and college get hurt much more often than football players, I guess because there are no helmets or pads. but if USF made a deal with him, USF should hold up their end; if he was told he could play both sports, USF should let him. Also, if Leavitt thinks that BJ cannot focus on both, Leavitt should not allow BJ to be the starting QB. Our starter needs 100% focus, and if isn’t there, the football team will incur losses because of it. I’m just saying, if it’s a showdown, BJ and the football program both lose if he plays basketball. Watch.

Thanks for tracking down the story, Scott. Hoped Heath would have a bit more to say, but that’s probably what he needed to say.
