Dan Johnson, who has authored two of the biggest home runs in team history, refused an assignment to Triple A Durham on Thursday and is now a free agent.
Johnson’s two-out, two-strike home run in the ninth inning of the final game of the season tied the score at 7-7 against the Yankees and set up the Rays dramatic win that clinched the AL Wild Card spot.
The 32-year-old Johnson was the Rays opening day first baseman but was designated for assignment after batting .115 with one home run and three RBIs in 25 games. After clearing waivers he accepted an assignment to Durham.
He returned to the Rays on Sept. 13.
Johnson finished the season batting .119 with two home runs and four RBIs.
His other home run was a three-run ninth inning shot in Chicago that gave the Rays their first win of the season.
