BALTIMORE In an effort to add some pop to their bench, the Rays selected 1B Dan Johnson from Triple A Durham today. They also recalled LHP Alex Torres.
Johnson began the year with the Rays, but was designated for assignment in late May after batting .115 with one home run and three RBIs.
He cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Durham, where he hit .273 with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs.
Torres was 9-7 with 3.08 ERA at Durham. He struck out 156 and walked 83 in 146 1/3 innings.
Torres made one appearance with the Rays. He faced the Yankees on July 18, pitched the ninth inning and walked three batters, the last which forced in the winning run.
The Rays also released pitcher Jay Buente, who made one appearance with the team this season.
Mike Ekstrom and Rob Delaney both cleared waivers. The Rays are waiting to see if those two will accept their assignments to Durham.
