BALTIMORE Johnny Damon’s assault on baseball’s record books continued Tuesday night at Camden Yards when the Rays designated hitter stole second base in the second inning.
It was the 400th steal of Damon’s career, and it made him only the ninth player in baseball history to steal 400 bases and hit 200 home runs.
The others are Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Rickey Henderson, Craig Biggio, Joe Morgan, Paul Molitor, Marquis Grissom and Roberto Alomar.
Damon also became just the second player with 400 steals, 200 home runs and 100 triples, joining Molitor.
“That’s pretty impressive company,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “And the other guy is in the hall of fame.”
Damon reached base with a single, which was the 2,710th hit of his career. One more hit and Damon ties Billy Williams for 61st place on the all-time hit list.
