TAMPA - Free agent QB Daunte Culpepper could sign with a new team as soon as today—if he’d accept backup money.
A lot of teams, the Bucs, Jaguars, Jets and Ravens included, have an interest in signing the Dolphins castoff, but we’re hearing that few, if any, are interested in signing Culpepper for the dollar figure he’s put on himself.
Word is that Culpepper, who made $5.5 million last year, is asking for similar “starter’s’’ money in a new contract.
You certainly can’t blame the guy for asking, but the likelihood is that Culpepper will have to drop his asking price if he wants to get a deal done before training camps open up.

If he drops his price and passes the physical, sign him. Like many have stated, this might be a make or break year for the team. Having proven QBs on the roster is aways good. And while Gradkowski played his butt off last year, it was way to early for him to start. The pros outweigh the cons on this one.

He’s not smart enough to run the BUCS offense. I doubt if he could even call the play—much less be able to remember a checkoff or even call it. Let someone else have the benchwarmer.

the bucs should just singed culpepper and then let go of jeff or trade him. Then they will have cap space

Daunte Culpepper is a star. The Bucs need him more than any QB they currently have. With a decent o-line, he could average 275 yards passing per game. Garcia and Simms should be the back-up to him!

Atlanta has already stated they are not interested in him. I think the Bucs need to poney and grab this guy. I live in Jeresy and have the displeasure or watching the Eagle every stinking week. Garcia is good. But he is not as good as Gruden is making him out to be. I think “just in case” Jeff does not pan out you need a decent back up. Daunte is that. Go get em Jon don’t be a fool!

Based on Culpepper’s problems at Miami, I don’t see any team paying him that kind of money. His agent should sell him on the idea of an incentive laden contract, maybe with a two million dollar starting point. The Bucs could afford that if the trade Simms, which they should do. Regardless how far Dante has slipped, he’s a better QB than Simms.

pete I agree its a make or break year for gruden but everything else you said just doesnt make sense… culpepper playing behind gradkowski? come on now… and isnt any area of this team “unstoppable”

we should get daunte and let simms go. hes not going to do it for us!! i say have garcia at 1 gradkowski at 2 and daunte at the 3 spot!! we have 3 veterans that have potential to accomplish plenty. have a stronger line and have 3 great receivers in galloway, stovall, and clayton with alex smith at tight end tampa is unstopable. with these guys we should put up 24 points a game. defensibly no team can put up more then 14 points against us. this is make or break for gruden

If he passes the physical then teams have to understand that he had one of the most prolific seasons as a quarterback in the history of the NFL!

What is this guy thinking ,asking for starter money ,come on , he could atleast sing as a back up and show he can play then ask for the starter money but he must show what he is worth isntead off just guessing it .

Your website is a total disaster. I click on the link for the game last night and I get the most busy useless site I have ever seen from a newspaper. Why is the Culpepper story the lead. I can’t find the link for the game. It looks nice but it is an absolute disaster. I am not trying to bash your paper, I always had gone to the Trib to check out the Bucs in the past, but Whoa, I am having to go to the times just to get the story. Good Luck.
