Crawford suffers setback, but remains optimistic

By TONY FABRIZIO

ST. PETERSBURG – The update on left fielder Carl Crawford is mixed.

Crawford said he aggravated his strained left shoulder Friday night in his pinch-running assignment in which he had to dive back to first base a few times on pick-off attempts and was thrown out stealing second. But he also said he might be able to play Sunday.

“I’m not in the lineup (today), so I’m still day-to-day,” Crawford said.

Manager Joe Maddon said Crawford will be available as a pinch-runner again in today’s 4:10 p.m. game against the Diamondbacks, but he didn’t know when the All-Star would be able to return to the outfield or even DH.

About Crawford’s chances of playing Sunday, Maddon said, “(Trainer) Ronnie (Porterfield) said there’s an outside chance.”

One day after being no-hit by former Rays pitcher Edwin Jackson and wasting a stellar start by Jeff Niemann, the Rays will try to get even in the three-game series by sending David Price to the mound.

Price (10-3, 2.39 ERA) leads the American League in ERA and is tied for first in wins. He’s in contention to be named as the starting AL pitcher in next month’s All-Star game.

But the Rays will encounter a capable young right-hander in ex-Yankee Ian Kennedy, who underwent surgery in May 2009 for an aneurysm under his right armpit. Kennedy is 3-5, but he has eight quality starts in his last nine outings and a 3.60 ERA.

There was no residual depression in the clubhouse or from Maddon over Jackson’s no-hitter Friday night – which should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Maddon.

“It’s not about yesterday; it’s about today,” Maddon said.

The Rays are the only team in major league history to be no-hit three times in a year, and, of course, two of those no-hitters were perfect games.

According to The Elias Sports Bureau, Jackson in the first major league pitcher to throw a no-hitter with an ERA above 5.00 with at least 15 starts into a season.

Here is Tampa Bay’s lineup:

RAYS

B.J. Upton, CF
Sean Rodriguez, 2B
Evan Longoria, 3B
Carlos Pena, 1B
Kelly Shoppach, C
Ben Zobrist, RF
Willy Aybar, DH
Matt Joyce, LF
Jason Bartlett, SS

David Price, LHP
