SEATTLE—Carl Crawford is back in left field today after sitting the previous three games with soreness in his hamstring. He said his leg only feels about “85 percent”, but he’s looking forward to the upcoming run of games on a grass surface to help him out. The artificial stuff at the Trop really seems to do a number on him.
B.J. Upton is back in the lineup after being benched yesterday and his thoughts this afternoon largely echoed those offered up yesterday. Lesson learned and it’s time to move on. Joe Maddon concurred.
“History,” said Maddon. “Ancient history.”
Jason Bartlett, however, is not quite ready to return to the field. He’s still experiencing pain in his right index finger when he releases a ball while throwing and won’t be able to play shortstop until that problem is alleviated. The uncertainty over his status continues to leave Rocco Baldelli in limbo, but he understands what’s going on. The Rays don’t have a roster spot for him until they send Ben Zobrist back down once Bartlett is ready, so he’ll just have to wait it out.
Speaking of shortstops, the Rays confirmed Reid Brignac suffered a fracture in his left wrist. He is slated to head to St. Pete to see a specialist, but the Rays don’t know how long he’ll be out.
Elsewhere, there is much appreciation in the clubhouse regarding the Chad Bradford acquisition. Those who have hit against him from the right-handed side generally haven’t enjoyed the experience.
Updating with one more update. As expected, the Vero Beach Florida State League franchise has been sold to the Ripken Baseball Group, the Vero Beach Press Journal reports. The Rays will be a minority partner in the franchise, which will relocate to Port Charlotte in conjunction with the Rays’ move of their spring training facilities there next season.
As for tonight’s game, here’s the Rays’ lineup:
Iwamura 2B
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Floyd DH
Navarro C
Hinske RF
Zobrist SS
Sonnanstine P
