Crawford, Navarro scratched

Posted Mar 26, 2007 by Marc Lancaster

Updated Mar 26, 2007 at 12:43 PM

Carl Crawford was supposed to return to the lineup today, and Dioner Navarro was supposed to continue his recovery by catching about 100 pitches. It won’t happen. Neither player is in the lineup here in Winter Haven.

Updating, Joe Maddon says Navarro has some residual soreness in his hamstring and the Rays didn’t want to chance it. Navarro’s son is having surgery tomorrow and the Rays want him to focus on that, so the earliest he’ll return to the lineup is Wednesday. As for Crawford, he again allegedly wanted to play today but the medical staff wanted him to get checked out by a doctor one last time. Maddon said Crawford probably would be playing if it had been a shorter trip than Winter Haven. He is expected to play tomorrow. Also, Rocco Baldelli probably won’t return until Thursday, but he may play in a minor-league game tomorrow. Here’s who is playing today:

Rays
B.J. Upton 2B
Ben Zobrist SS
Ty Wigginton DH
Greg Norton 1B
Delmon Young RF
Akinori Iwamura 3B
Raul Casanova C
Jonny Gomes LF
Elijah Dukes CF
James Shields P

Indians
Grady Sizemore CF
Trot Nixon RF
Travis Hafner DH
Victor Martinez C
David Dellucci LF
Jhonny Peralta SS
Andy Marte 3B
Mike Rouse 2B
Kelly Shoppach C
Jeremy Sowers P

One other note: Gov. Charlie Crist will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the home opener April 6.

Unfortunately, the 7 game unbeaten streak came to an end today.  But, James Shields pitched very well after struggling early. He went 7 innings and had 7 K’s. He allowed 3 earned runs and his spring ERA is now 2.96.
Cantu hat a 2 run HR in the 8th inning, which was nice to see. Dukes continues to kill the ball and is now batting .346.  Shawn Camp made a brief appearance late and lowered his spring ERA to 0.93. Gomes hit a double. It will be nice if we can get Rocco and CC back in the lineup together this week so we can see a dress rehearsal with the real line up.
