BALTIMORE - The news the Rays got on All-Star Carl Crawford late tonight was better than it could have been. The All-Star left-fielder suffered only a testicular contusion when he was hit in the groin area by a pick-off throw in the first inning of the Rays’ 13-inning, 11-10 loss to the Orioles.
Crawford was taken by ambulance - because it was the most convenient form of transportation available - to nearby Unviersity of Maryland Medical Center, where tests came back normal. The Rays said his status is day-to-day, but Crawford indicated he probably won’t play in Wednesday afternoon’s series finale.
“Right now it’s real sore, but the doctor said there wasn’t any damange or anything like that,” Crawford said. “I don’t know how long the pain is going to be there, but I’m guessing I’ll probably take a day off or someting like that.”
The Rays have Thursday off before opening a weekend series at Cleveland on Friday.
Crawford reached on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and was hit flush in the groin area by a pickoff throw from Jake Arrieta. He rolled over in pain and needed several minutes to gather himself before returning to the dugout. He was done for the night.
Matt Joyce moved from right field to left, Ben Zobrist moved from second to right, Reid Brignac went from shortstop to second and Jason Bartlett entered the game to play short.
Crawford said he was not wearing a cup and doesn’t plan to start wearing one.
“No, I’ve never worn a cup,” he ssaid. “I make too many different kind of moves to wear a cup.”
