Could the unthinkable happen Saturday at Duke? Could Florida State lose to the Blue Devils? After watching N.C. State quarterback Daniel Evans work his magic against the Seminoles’ young secondary Thursday—remember, the Wolfpack fell behind 20-10 late in the third quarter—anything seems possible. After all, Evans was making only his second career start.
But if FSU fans believe the program hit rock bottom following the Seminoles’ fourth loss to N.C. State in the past seven seasons, what would a loss to Duke mean for the program? Would they demand Coach Bobby Bowden’s retirement on the spot? Would they want to line offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden in front of a firing squad? What about Drew Weatherford? Time for him to transfer or join Chris Rix as a broadcaster? Whatever the case, the fallout would be ugly. Real ugly considering the mood of Seminole Nation after the 24-20 loss to N.C. State.
Duke did lead Alabama 14-10 at halftime in Saturday’s 30-14 loss. Still, even against an FSU team depleted by enough injuries to summon the Red Cross, the Blue Devils shouldn’t stand a chance Saturday. It is FSU-Duke. And in football, that means FSU always wins.
If the outcome is anything but an FSU win on Saturday, rock bottom will have a new meaning around Tallahassee.
