Could Henry Be Heading Bucs Way?

TAMPA - Even after drafting Dexter Jackson in the second round, the Bucs still have a pretty size-able hole in their receiving corps. Could it be they have plans to fill that hole with troubled receiver Chris Henry?

A judge in Cincinnati has temporarily released the seemingly always-in-trouble Henry from electronic monitoring and house arrest so that he can travel to another city to attend a tryout with an NFL team. The team was not named in Tuesday’s hearing but the judge has asked for a letter from the team so we should know which team is after Henry pretty soon.

No one ‘round these parts would be at all surpised if it was the Bucs. They’ll do just about anything to improve their team, including offering wayward players a second or even third chance. You have to wonder, though, if the Bucs would extend such an offer to someone as troubled as Henry.

Henry has twice been suspended by the NFL for drug and alcohol-related incidents and is currently facing charges following an incident in which he allegedly punched a man in the head and threw a beer can into the man’s car. Following his arrest on those charges, Henry was held under $51,000 bail. When he made bail, he was ordered to wear the electronic monitoring device and placed under house arrest.

We’ll let you know just as soon as we know which team is after Henry.

Do we really want to become the Raiders?  When we look at the dramatic change since the new regime took over, we see that character is not a consideration to be a Buc.  Brooks, Barber, Lynch, Kelly, and even Sapp, for all his antics, was a man I’d want my kids to meet.  As the old guys retire, the new Tampa Bay is an ugly mix of good guys and undesireables.  That’s why we’re quick to say enough is enough. Don’t just win...Win with a team we’re proud of.

there is no quote from the team because the team is freezing out the local media right now.

Roy that passive agressive butt kisser from Pewter Report is really dissing you on this story.  I agree with the story, the bucs have a history of going after damaged goods off the clearance rack because you can get it cheap!!

I assume the same story could be written in the other 31 NFL cities, except for Cincinnati.

This is baseless speculation, which is fine, but it should same somewhere in the article that this is baseless speculation.

What is more disappointing is that there isn’t any attempt at real journalism in this blog, such as a quote from the team or the agent. I would expect better from the Tribune.

Why is Talib even part of this conversation?

Lets define guys by what they do as adults in the NFL Talib might turn out to be the next Derrick Brooks but the only way that happens is if we give him the chance to turn into the next Chris Henry as well.

Lets be honest the biggest fear with drug testing in sports(MLB, NHL, NBA NFL etc etc..) isn’t the performance enhancing drugs its the ‘recreational’ drugs. These drugs pose the biggest issue and risk to the players and its why they don’t want increase drug testing.  Sure start testing everybody and we will be watching the ABA instead of the NBA...well at least until we test those guys

talib smoked pot in college, just like a vast majority of the population did in college.  this was 2 years ago when he was busted. If this is such a horrible crime he should be banned from the nfl along with a huge chunk of the other players who have done the same thing.....get real.  believe it or not some people drink and smoke in college(sinners!) get over yourself, no one is perfect

Words these writers live by…

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that cra* is king
Give us dirty laundry!

Well Mitch, you have a point about having a lot of receivers.  However, there is no problem when it comes to “who to cut”.  You cut the guys who are not the top 5 or 6.  Preaseason has a great way of making those decisions easier.

Plus, Henry and Bryant are high risk, low probability players.  They will have to do something special to make the team, and that includes proving themselves to be reliable.

We still don’t have a proven #2, so that’s the attraction of Henry.

First of all, I’m tired of hearing folks bash Roy Cummings...this is a possible “true to life” story, who knows...and it does give good conversation piece (good writing Roy). Secondly, don’t talk trash about Aqib Talib, you don’t even know him (period). Third… if you were a true Buc Fan where is your support for your team. Even if we did pick up Henry, he can be rehabilitated and be a better person. Don’t always look at the bad in a person and think there is no good. The guy can change...I believe if you surround this guy with positive people he can produce and be a positive player on the field and off. If they want to give this guy a second chance- plan to revive his career and help this guy be a leader and positive citizen.

Firstly, I would not want Chris Henry in a Buccaneer uniform, but I don’t think he will be anyway.

Secondly, why do so many people say the Raiders are the “lawbreakers” of the NFL? It makes no sense to call the Bucs the NFC Raiders. The Raiders don’t even have a bunch of lawbreakers? Russell? Hall? Fargas? Asomugha? Morrison? Howard? Walker?  Where are the lawbreakers? If any team personifies lawbreakers it is the Bengals!

Saying a player has a “drug history” because he smoked pot a few times is like saying someone has an addiction to pornography because they look at Playboy. What seminary did you grow up in, Andy.

roy you start all this rumor stuff, get people riled up for nothing. the bucs are not going to sign henry, so stop writing misleading news. you make it sound that every low life the bucs are going to sign. stop it already, just write the facts

Posted by  Andy Grosh, Greencastle on 05/06  at  08:02 PM

That’s just the type of player we need when we just drafted a rookie corner with a drug history.  Henry is going to be suspended for the season anyway so what’s the point in wasting time bringing him in?

ARE YOU GUY’S CRAZY!
YES GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE,HE IS A GOOD
RECIVER AND CAN HELP THIS TEAM.
I DON’T GIVE A RAT’S A** IF HE IS A LOSER OFF THE FIELD, REMEMBER KEY!
HE WAS A PEACE OF CRAP BUT WHEN HE WAS
ON THE FIELD HE WAS REAL PRODUCTIVE AND
HELPED US WIN A SUPERBOWL RIGHT?
IF HE CAN HELP US GET BACK TO THE TOP
I WELCOME HIM. TO ME IT’S ALL ABOUT
WINS AND LOSSES. I’M OUT.

I am all for improving the team. However, the only place Henry should play is in the prison league with Michael Vick. There is a time when the GM and coach of a team has to consider the wellfare of the community. Henry is a violent thug...he has no place on the streets of Tampa. (Although once upon a time I felt the same way about Pittman......and changed my mind.

Posted by  JVand, Nashville on 05/06  at  05:38 PM

I think the Bucs have done well with these second chance players. Pitman and Hovan have been great team guys in Tampa. Pitman had some problems here but since then he has been under the radar. Rick Dudley a few years ago was productive.

David Boston was given a chance. He blew it. We cut him. No harm was done to the team. Jeremy Stevens was given a fair shot, he kept under the radar, but the obviously the Bucs saw something they did not like so they parted ways.

Its not the Raiders of the NFC, I think its well thought out and fair decisions have been made.

It sounds as if the Bucs are turning ito the Raiders of the NFC. After all we’re both pirates in a way, and both have had the same GM and coach. All a bunch of scumbags.

Posted by  john, pcb fl on 05/06  at  04:41 PM

HELL YEAH WELL TAKE HIM.HE WILL FIT IN NICE MITH GALLOWAY AND THE OTHER RECIVERS.I THINK IF WE CAN GET HIM HE WIIL BE THE SECOND RECIVER BEHIND GALLOWAY.

Posted by  Mike, Clearwater on 05/06  at  04:32 PM

NO FREAKIN WAY!! This piece of trash doesn’t deserve to play in the NFL!

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 05/06  at  04:23 PM

So we sign Antonio Bryant (baggage and all), draft Dexter Jackson, have Clayton, Hilliard, Galloway coming back, plus Stovall and Warren, yet you summize that Chris Henry, and all his baggage could land in Tampa?  Well Roy, please enlighten me as to who we would part ways with?  So Roy, do you think Chris Henry AND Antonio Bryant can co-exist on the same team, let alone on the field?  Granted, Henry is a very good receiver, but is he better than Bryant?  Or is he a result of lining up with Chad Johnson and TJ H.(not going to try to spell that name)?  Does Alvin Harper’s name ring a bell?
