Durant will be without one of its top defensive linemen for the rest of the season.
Cougars coach Mike Gottman said junior tackle Daivonte Lumpkin is out for the remainder of the year after suffering a broken leg during the Cougars’ 20-15 win over Sickles on Oct. 16. Lumpkin was injured on the game’s final play.
Lumpkin was among Durant’s top performers on the defensive line this season. He led all Cougars linemen with 29 tackles and was second among linemen with 2.5 sacks.
“He was doing a great job for us, so that really hurts,” Gottman said. “Plus, we were already thin on the defensive line, so now we’re even thinner.”
Durant, which had a bye last week, hosts neighborhood rival Plant City in a big district game Friday. The Cougars can secure a state playoff berth with a victory.
