Cory Murphy claimed
Posted Jan 19, 2009 by Erik Erlendsson

With the Lightning banged up on defense - Matt Smaby will be out tonight - leaving the team with essentially three healty NHL defenseman - not counting rookie Kevin Quick and converted David Koci - the team has claimed Cory Murphy off re-entry waivers from the Florida Panthers.
Murphy has had a hard time cracking the Panthers’ lineup this season and has been hampered by a shoulder injury this season. By claiming him on re-entry waivers, Tampa Bay will be responsible for a little less than half of his remaining $875,000 contract this season. Murphy is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next season.

Will Cory make it in time to play tonight? Being without several D-men it will be VERY difficult for the Lightning to win games with the few healthy D-men! All of that and now Arty out be careful about tonights game.

The Bolts were having a severe problem winning when all the defensemen were healthy. With only three healthy defensemen, their record can hardly be any worse than it was when they were at full strength, unless something really unusual happens.

With all of our injuries, this was a good move. We get him at half price (recall waivers I think), can’t complain about that. Would also like to point out that we once got another underachieving offensive defenseman from the Panthers a few years ago, turned out to be a pretty good deal (not saying this will happen in this case, but just wanted to throw it out there).

Cory Murphy is a great powerplay specialist, he skates and moves the puck well. His downside is he is small and has a hard time clearing the net but he is good for the powerplay and a great team player. Last year he started great and then got injured, this year Panthers are loaded on D and hard for him to break into the line-up. Good luck.

I love the Lightning, but I don’t want to hear any whining about defense. Its poor choices; first choiceswere Boyle, Kuba, O’Brien, Picard, and Lundin ( not to mention Sarich, Pratt and Lukowich). Second choice was you bring in Mezsaros ( who I like ) but you make him out to be so great, put his picture on all the billboards with the big names, but forget that Ranger is our best defenseman. Its like slapping Ranger in the face. Poor choices! Could we get an open ice hiiter, What is Scott Stevens doing now ( just kidding)

Tommy, you act like the fans were the ones who got rid of all the good defensemen. Why not call the owners and talk to them? We, the fans, are expressing our disapproval of owners and management for neglecting and/or trading the defense away. Voicing our disapproval is our right as fans. Your criticism is more correctly to be addressed with ownership and management.

I’ll keep this short, sign Murphy now they got away with a steal to get him, waive Malik. Quick has been impressive.
Smaby - Murphy
Eminger - Meszaros
Quick - Krajicek
Then next year replace Krajicek with Lundin.

Dustin, I wholeheartedly second that motion - all the way down the line.

I have no way of contacting the ownership group, Bolt Fan. I am hoping they read comments like these to find out what the fans are thinking, doubt they do, but one can only hope. Anyway, I was not downing any fans, but thanks for the correction, mom.
