While the Plant City offense made its share of miscues in a season-opening loss to East Bay, Raiders coach Jason Strunk couldn’t help but be impressed with the play of his young quarterback, Bennie Coney.
Coney, a sophomore, was a perfect 9-for-9 passing in the first half last Friday against East Bay and finished 15-for-23 for 170 yards in the Raiders’ 17-14 loss to the Indians.
“Bennie was firing the ball all night long,” Strunk said.
Now, Strunk is hoping the Raiders offense can correct their mistakes this week at Middleton. Plant City fumbled four times, including once at the East Bay 2-yard line late in the fourth quarter as the Raiders were driving in for the go-ahead score. The unit also had some ill-advised turnovers during a preseason loss to Tampa Bay Tech.
“It was unreal,” Strunk said of his team’s miscues against the Indians.
