Brandon’s Chris Colwill didn’t lock up a spot on the U.S. Olympic diving team at last weekend’s trials in Indianapolis but he’s put himself in strong position to accomplish that goal at next month’s selection camp in Knoxville, Tenn.
Colwill, a Tampa Prep and University of Georgia graduate, finished a solid second in men’s 3-meter springboard at the dive trials, 87.8 points behind winner Troy Dumais of Texas and 101.7 points ahead of third-place Justin Wilcock of Indianapolis. In the three rounds—prelims, semifinals and finals—Colwill scored impressive totals of 477.5, 483.5 and 504.1.
Only the winners of each event earn Olympic berths. The second individual spot, as well as all four synchronized diving teams, will be chosen at a selection camp in Knoxville, Tenn., from July 2-6. The top six divers on each event are invited to the camp.
“I achieved a big goal, to stay above the 475-point mark for every list,” Colwill said. “Obviously the guy who won is a great competitor and I couldn’t be happier with how I did.”
For the trials’ finals, Colwill upgraded his dive list and finished the round with a reverse 2-½ with 2-½ twists, a dive with a 3.9 degree of difficulty—a dive few divers attempt to perform in competition. Colwill scored as high as 8s on the dive, which he has competed only one other time. Colwill also had the highest single-dive score of the afternoon, earning 96.25 points on his reverse 3 ½ that resulted in three 9.5 marks from the judges.
“I was a little bit nervous putting that dive in there but I wanted to show the country what I could do and I was happy that I finished it that well,” Colwill said. “The trials come just once every four years and I thought this was the place to try it.”
Although he didn’t secure a spot for the Beijing Games, Colwill is confident he can take the second berth in 3-meter springboard, as well as men’s 3-meter synchro, the event he and dive partner Jevon Tarantino are favored to win at the selection camp.
“I gained a lot of confidence at the trials,” Colwill said. “I need to carry through the next two weeks but I feel pretty good about how I’m diving right now.”
