I get the feeling the Bucs are already the front-runners in the soon-to-be-launched Rod Coleman sweepstakes.
Coleman just completed an interview on Sirius NFL Radio in which he spent a good part of the time literally fawning over the Bucs.
He spoke glowingly about Coach Jon Gruden and said the Bucs appear to be a team that is just a player or two away from contending for a Super Bowl.
All in all he made it sound as if Tampa is a place he’d like to land and I know for sure that the parties will be talking very soon.
Such a marriage would make plenty of sense. Coleman is one of the best interior pass rushers in the game and he’s no stranger to the Bucs’ hierarchy.
He was drafted by Bruce Allen and played for Jon Gruden for three years when all were with the Raiders.
And while the Bucs have a promising young DT in Jovan Haye, there is no question a healthy Coleman would greatly improve their pass rush.
He has 58.5 career sacks, including 52.5 between 2001 and 2007, the most by an interior defensive linemen during that span.
He had just two sacks last year but that’s because he played in only five games, the result of hand and triceps injuries that forced him to go on injured reserve after a Week 5 game against Tampa Bay.

You called it Dex. Nobody will ever doubt you again. I still think we should keep Jovan Haye on the team. Maybe bring him in at Nose on passing downs cause Lord knows Hovan isn’t even gonna be in the same area code as the Quarterback.

Sorry John from St. Pete. I thought that Bucs fans from people outside of the state would be welcome to participate. I was only stating that perhaps money could be used elswere since Colman will be 32 when the 08 season starts, and im sure your aware that out of his nine seasons he has only completed all 16 games twice. Gruden must really love this guy, considering he did not re-sighn the greatest under tackle in Buc history (Warren Sapp) after the 2003 at the age of 31. Im sure Colman has manny great years left in him. PS get spell check

Wow,look at you-the bucs fan. Finally seeing the light.I said that a month ago about Hayes. He gets alot of garbage tackle and sacks and then do all of those fancy dances-the kind of dances you’ll see on Dancing with the stars or soul train.I never bought what this guy was selling-he’s a backup, nothing else.

I know people won’t understand this, but under tackle is the biggest need on this team right now. Without consistent pressure from the middle, Monte’s schemes don’t work effectively and everything breaks down. There’s nothing wrong with Haye. He works hard, overachieves. But he’s not a disrupter. He doesn’t strike fear in anyone. Whether through the draft or free agency, the Bucs need a charge on their D-line to take it to the next level…and appherently now they better get a cornerback too.

Jason from PA hit it right on the head with his post. Jovan Haye has a lot of people fooled with his cheerleader act. Speed rushing D-Ends like we have are only as good as the D-Tackles that flush the QB. If we want to be a championship team we need to seriously upgrade at the 3-Tech position. Warren Sapp was the motor that drove our defense to where it was and until we improve the middle of our d-line we will not get back to that level. That includes upgrading at the Nose too cause Hovan is no spring chicken anymore either.

I can see why TE/WR would be the ideal positions to take a chance by spending more money in these areas in the offseason. Crumpler, Stallworth or as Roy Cummings writes Bryant Johnson from Arz would be perfect in Tampa. I would love to see the CB and DT come from the draft but if Coleman can be had for the right price he wouldnt be a bad investment.

Justin Smith (DE) is going to be available from the Bengals and that would be a much better pick up IMO. Also, Lito Shepard (CB) is only 26 years old and a great player, he has been givin’ permission to seek a trade. If we could get these two guys on our roster, we could get everything else we need from the draft.
Ohyeah….Benard Berrian might be available also, and if he is, we NEED to get him.

It would not stunt there growth it would take some pressure off of them to have a veteran come in and share snaps thereby keeping them fresh and ready to bust some heads. Thats why its a team game the more good teammates you have the better you are. duh

Considering the way the Bucs consistently rotate their D-Line and use two tight-end sets, I can’t see those two guys stunting anybody growth. If anything, another veteran influence could only help both Smith and Haye.

hey kyle last time i checked alex smith was a tight end idk about in canada but d-line and tight end are 2 different positions and thata as a true buc fan the one thing that makes our dfenece work is a stong d-line so we need all the help we can get and a guy that avareges at lest 10 sacks a year would be great

i never understood gruden’s infatuation with veteran players’ who seem to have very little gas left in the tank…its one thing to plug in someone off the waiver wire when it fills a position of need, its quite another to bring a guy in at the expense of a developing young player…the bucs need to get younger…not older…their collective age, especially at key positions, was a big part in their late season collapse….take a cue from the giants…look at how they played sans shockey and barber….

It won’t “Stump the growth” of either Smith or Haye. With the D-line, they sub out the entire game, keeping them fresh for all 4 quarters…this is a good move. Adding Crumpler would just be a bonus…we need another tight end anyways, I’m sure stevens will be a gonner if we get Crumpler…who would you rather have?

I agree with the comment regarding Charlie Garner and Derrick Deese. Don’t break the bank on old veterans. Find the young, up and coming player like the Patriots did with Wes Welker. For once, listen to the scouting department. We don’t have to spend all 20 million this year.

A reasonable contract, as opposed to a ridiculous one, has got to be the way to go. Haye may grow with a leader like Coleman by him, plus he was drafted by Gru-Allen in 99’, they obviously like him, and will take a gamble if the price is right.
Donte Stallworth or Bernard Berrian too, please!

I like Jovan Haye alot, and Greg White is a great player that can switch back an forth from DT to DE. I’m just not sure this is where we need to spend the big bucks. A great TE or WR, a great Left Tackle, or a shutdown CB seems to be what we really need.
If we were to spend big bucks on the D-line, I’d rather see it spent on some freakish DE that could pressure the QB on every play. I think we are pretty good at DT.

I like Jovan Haye too, but 6 sacks is just ok, it’s not great. He’s a little too old to be considered up and coming. I don’t see him getting any better than he is right now. The Bucs need to quit being content with guys that are just ok, and go after greatness if we really want to compete for a championship. The same can be said for Alex Smith. I don’t think Crumpler has dropped as many balls as he did last year in his entire career. Do not accept mediocrity, go get some great ones!

DUE TO HIS INJURIES WHICH HE HAS RECENTLY HAD HOPEFULLY HE WILL GET A INCENTIVE BASED CONTRACT WITH AT LEAST A MILL. S/B

I like what I’m hearing. We need a couple nasty hogs on that interior d-line and we’ll have that championship D back in form. I would also love to see a game breaking wide out signed!

Lets not get excited about big names, if we sighned Colman and Crumpler would that not stunt the growth of Alex Smith and Jovan Haye who seem to be good up and comming players? It was not that long ago we were tricked by aging big names that had bigger salaries, are we still paying Charlie Garner and Derick Deese?

Cody, why are you killing me like that?I’m a good guy-but i did write about this guy. You’re right about Hovan, there is no rush from this guy.The bucs should not give this guy another contract.I think we should see if we can get Coleman for cheap.Have we released any scrubs yet?
