Coco Crisp a Ray? According to him, almost.
Crisp, who resigned with the A’s, told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Rays nearly won the bidding war.
The center field re-upped with the A’s after they came back with a two-year deal worth $14 million and includes a $7.5 million team option for 2014.
That would appear to be too rich for the Rays, though his agent Steve Comte, told Slusser the Rays were “not only a viable option but the best option” until the A’s came back with their winning offer.
Here is Slusser’s story: http://blog.sfgate.com/athletics/2012/01/04/coco-crisp-says-he-chose-as-over-rays/
If Crisp isn’t kidding, it would have been an interesting signing for the Rays. It would likely have signaled the end of the B.J. Upton Era. It would have also been interesting to see how the money given to Crisp would impact their search for a designated hitter or free agent.
Or, signing Crisp might have been the start of a series of deals that involved Upton going to another team in exchange for a first baseman or designated hitter.
We’ll never know.
