AP, coaches agree: USF a 10

This proves I’m really, really smart - or really, really dumb (I’ll save you the trouble and go with the latter), but USF is ranked No. 10 in both the AP and coaches polls (tied with Georgia for No. 10 in the coaches poll) and that just happens to be where I ranked USF this week.

Also, my Top 25 ballot has the same 25 teams (in a different order, of course) as the AP poll.

I won’t repeat my complaints made in the last blog post, but I don’t think USC should be ahead of USF.  For that matter, Texas Tech hasn’t beaten anyone.  Whatever.

I will repeat this, though:  BYU’s opponents are 5-14.

Allen, fair enough and I won’t repeat my answer - and I voted USF ahead of Texas Tech.

Allen, and USF’s four I-A opponents are 4-10 against I-A competition and 3-0 against I-AA competition.

My biggest concern right now is we are ahead of all 1 loss teams but USC. So, if we run the table and there is another undefeated team (big 12, Big 10 or SEC), we will not be in the national title game..USC will.  Even if USC squeaks by other teams, writers will say they know how to win and deserve to be in the title game (see Ohio State 2 years ago).  If USF squeaks by several opponents , writers will say they are inconsistent.  I think 10 is a good spot for USF right now.  If we win, the ranking will mostly take care of itself.

What a wasted vote, putting Texas Tech where you did.  What big wins have they had so far this season.  I am still smarting from UF’s loss to Ole Miss.  Maybe a very strong Alabama team (Western Division, SEC) helped us out by defeating the Dawgs.  Congrats to USF, but some potholes lie ahead.

Brett:

What are you and the rest of the nation thinking on USC?  That’s absolute BS.  That’s why their should be a playoff because poll voters just don’t get it.  USC didn’t even drop 10 spots after losing to an AWFUL Oregon State team.  A two loss Oregon State team.  The rest I am OK with but am sick of this big school prejudice by the voters.  What has Ohio State done other than being Ohio State.  Almost losing to one of the worst D-1A teams in the nation Ohio U.  The struggle against Troy and Minnesota.  They get waxed by a USC team that got beat by Oregon State.  I just don’t get it.  Someone please bring a $1,000,000,000 Anti-Trust lawsuit to the Supreme Court to end this BCS garbage once and for all.

Por (Brett McMurphy) on September 28, 2008 (Suggest removal)

USF95, please answer this question for me. There are 18 undefeated teams. Does that mean since USC lost they should automatically be no higher than No. 19? And I’d love to get rid of the BCS and start a playoff, but ain’t gonna happen. Wallace, I have Tech at No. 12 in my poll - that’s actually five spots lower than they’re ranked (at No. 7).

People who posted comments keep talking about other undeserving teams being given greater consideration just because of their names. Let’s not forget that USF has had some SLOPPY games this season, including an overtime win that should have been a loss to UCF - a very mediocre unranked team.
If you ask me, South Florida is LUCKY to be placed so high with their UNCONVINCING wins.

Indeed, some of these pollsters have their proverbial heads in the sand.  What about the strength of the opposition, strength of schedule. For example, Texas Tech has rolled over such powerhouses as Eastern Washington, Nevada, SMU, and U Mass. They do not deserve to be even in the top 15.  And as for USF, the comment already made about often poor and sloppy play does apply.  And just who have they defeated?  Any top 10 or top 20 teams?  This polling is so absurd it makes one <laugh out loud>.  Why did not USC fall more, after this last horrendous loss?  Yes, the BCS is largely to blame for this, but that format, like it or not, is likely to remain for decades.

Texas Tech at five?  They might be the most overrated program in the history of college football.  When was the last time Texas Tech won anything?

Then again, when was the last time USF won anything..

Plus - USC - they should be about 12.

Usf is very lucky to be ranked so high? Who do they play?? Oh thats right crap teams. Teams people neevr heard of.. teams without a drop of football blood in the school. Usf might play a “real program once every 5 games.  Tech has been around for a while, floating in and out of the 25 for a number of years.  Till usf actually plays Real teams, not high school teams.. i won’t respect them.  Just put them in the big ten or big 12 and see where they will place.

Por (Mark) on September 28, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Kansas is a crap team? USF each year increases its out of conference schedule based on the Pre-Season rankings. You can’t argue that. I guess next year when they take out Florida , they still won’t be good enough. They can beat teams from any of the conferences when on top of their game, like every other good team. Whether you have 5-star players or 2 star players, it’s whether you win or lose. Leavitt might be the “best” coach in the league turning the lesser talented players than the big boys have into the same equal talent or real football players.

Por (Mark) on September 28, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Are you kidding me on the Big Ten? I’ll give you a break on including the lesser talented, slower teams from the North. We beat Kansas in the tiny 12, USF is not scared of any conference to play in. A 2 star player in the South is equally as talented as a 4 star player up North. People just can’t fathom that USF is a high rising program with Leavitt at the helm. Show me a year where they’ve regressed, it’s not happening.

The polls don’t mean squat right now.  We just need to finish and not play DOWN to our competition and we will be alright.  Yesterday’s game was a nice change for us, we got out fast and STEPPED ON THEIR THROAT the whole game.  That’s what we need to keep doing.  Go Bulls.

Usf plays 2 ranked teams this year.. 2… Let me say that again 2… So they play 2 tough games.. about 4 on par games and the rest are barely d1 games.. USF IS A JOKE.  Look at Texas,  they play 5 ranked teams,, a few on par games and about 2 scrub teams. Teams like usf with a bullshit rank of sch, shouldn’t be in the top 10.

Usf plays in one of the 3 worst college fb conferences( polled last year).

Usf could be a good program.. but when you play scrub teams most of the year.. its not hard to look good. Why are people so f’n stupid with college football in tampa.

Bud,

Since you Love the Longhorns or since you do not really state what college you support…which brings me to two questions: 1)What college do you support? 2)Did you even go to and graduate college?
Do us all a favor and please move from Valrico to Texas or anywhere but the Tampa area since you are a hater!  Just curious, did you even graduate from a D1 college??!! If not stay off the Bulls/TBO post!

Hey Valrico Bud:

You sound like you might be a frustrated and disgruntled Ohio State fan.  Get on I-75 and head back north…and stop in at Gainesville and see the two trophies (football and basketball) Columbus had already counted.

What people don’t realize is how long it takes to get quality D1 opponents on your schedule - at least those outside of your conference.  Many teams don’t want to play USF because it is considered a lose/lose game.  Ask UCF.  In time, USF will get more highly ranked D1 opponents on their schedule.  Until then, they will continue to surprise the ones they do play.  Ask Auburn, NC, NC State, West Virginia, etc.

Future Non Conference Opponents for USF…

5 years against Miami
2 years against Florida
2 years against Michigan State
2 years against Indiana
2 years against Ball State
1 year against Notre Dame
1 year against NC State

Scheduling happens years in advance, nobody knows how good each team they schedule will be in the future. USF has been building their schedule for years to play solid non conference opponents, it helps the program grow.

03 - Alabama
04 - South Carolina
05 - Penn State, Miami
06 - Kansas, North Carolina
07 - Auburn

Taking shots about USF not playing anybody just shows ignorance to a rising program.

Everyone crying about USC’s ranking just needs to remember last year.

When we lost to Rutgers we dropped from #2 to #10 and I’m sure there were fans of other schools saying the same thing about us as we are saying about USC.

As Brett said, if we keep winning we’ll get bumped ahead of the teams with losses later down the road.

Enough with the new world order conspiracy theories. An undefeated BCS team is not going to be passed over by a 1 loss BCS team for the National Championship Game. Its too early to even be talking National Championship Games….this is how 3 game losing streaks start.
