CLEARWATER - Before Wednesday’s Big East Tournament contest against Cincinnati, University of South Florida coach Lelo Prado said he noticed a lack of enthusiasm and intensity.
“We were dead,” Prado said.
The listless Bulls were no match for the Bearcats, losing 11-1 in a game halted after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
“I thought we were in trouble in the locker room,” Prado said. “We have no excuse. For us to win, we have to play with great intensity and enthusiasm. I don’t know how you don’t bring it [Wednesday].”
The sixth-seeded Bulls (30-26) meet No. 7 seed West Virginia (37-20) tonight at 7 in an elimination contest at Bright House Field.
“If we play like we did [Wednesday], we’ll be home [tonight] by 9:30,” Prado said.
The second-seeded Bearcats (38-19), who entered the tournament as the league’s hottest team, broke a 1-1 tie with three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Tony Campana’s grand slam in the seventh accounted for the final margin.
USF senior Mike Consolmagno had two of the Bulls’ six hits. “All-around we have to play a lot better,” Consolmagno said.
USF junior Daniel Thomas, who didn’t make it past the second inning against Cincinnati on March 21, stuck around much longer this time, but the result was the same. Thomas (2-4) allowed nine hits and eight runs, five earned, in six innings.
“The results are there,” Prado said. “There’s not much I can say.”
The Bearcats had six extra-base hits and stole four bases to win their seventh consecutive game.
“We definitely didn’t come to play,” USF senior Joey Angelberger said.
