Chris Simms Going On IR

Posted Oct 9, 2007 by Anwar S. Richardson

Updated Oct 9, 2007 at 05:01 PM

Bucs GM Bruce Allen announced quarterback Chris Simms is going on the injured reserve list and will not play this season.

Simms’ move frees a roster spot for Tampa Bay to sign a running back, which it desperately needs since fullback Mike Alstott and running back Cadillac Williams are out for the season, while running back Michael Pittman will miss six to eight weeks. Allen anticipates announcing Tampa Bay’s newest running back by Wednesday, and added he did not expect to trade for that person.

Although Allen would not expand on who the potential candidates were - those guys worked out at One Buc on Tuesday - he did acknowledge former Raiders running back Zack Crockett was among the list of possible replacements.

“I know there has been a lot of speculation over the last week or so. Some are names we had interest in. Some are not,” Allen said.

Allen also classified running back Pittman’s injury as a “badly sprained ankle”, but said he anticipates his return this season.

I like Chris and wish him the best. But I believe that under Jeff Garcia’s shadow Bruce Gradkowski will be a future Superbowl winner at Tampa. Maybe we can trade Chris to the Giants for the rights to Tiki? We better!

I like Chris but the Bucs should have traded him either early on, or when they lost Cadillac. They could have at least gotten a draft pick.

I just read the list of players we tried out.  None of them are even signed to practice squads.  All of them with the exception of crocket are undrafted rookies.  This will do nothing for us.  Looks like we’re sticking it out with graham. I want to throw up.

It’s no real surprise in the move because I think that the Bucs still view Chris as their potential quarterback of the future. The timing of the move is a bit puzzling though, unless there is a deal to bring in a veteran running back in the immediate future. What about Priest Holmes?

I am glad to hear we are not trading to get a running back. I think our running attack is going to be marginal no matter who we have back there. I am not saying we should give up on this season, but at least we will keep the quality players we have and perhaps we can use a high pick in the draft to improve the running back position.

I was just thinking that I haven’t seen Marshall Faulk on any of the NFL network shows for about a week.  He is normally on 90% of their shows.  He might still have a little gas left in the tank…maybe I’ve been hanging out with Ricky Williams too much…conspiracy????

don’t write off “teddy” graham, and ken darby, Earnest will do a good job we just cant be down by 15 and then have only 3 plays in a quarter to try to run the ball. I think that we should trust ole gruden and allen as the mad scientist they are and that they will find a reasonalble third back. another thing to think of is even if we trade for someone, if the don’t know grudens offense it’ll be all for not

its obvious that simms probably wouldn’t be able to pass a physical so trading him was a non-starter (not to mention the salary cap hit tampa would have to endure)...remember last year they gave him a new deal…according to espn any team can sign anyone from anyone else’s practice squad…i hope gruden et.al. will raise their sights a little higher than a walk on from the streets…crockett is the exception because of his familiarity with the system which means he can be brought on=line the fastest…

Simms needs to get healthy. He played like a warrior for us and thats why I think they gave him 5million, I mean he lost an organ.Further more I think that we should part ways with him and wish him the best.Hopfully we get back in the swing of things get a good back and start kicken some @ again! Go BUCSSSSSS

Does Jake Plummer fall into this equation at all?  A number of quarterbacks have gone down for the season.  Are we in a position to trade his rights to another team for support at the running back position?

I have two comments on this:
    1.  While Zack Crockett knows Gruden’s system, he is a FULLBACK not a TAILBACK!  He WAS an excellent blocker, but he will be a back-up for Askew, not Graham.
    2.  Simms contract includes playing time clauses, so he won’t be costing the Bucs the full 5 million.

Bye, Bye Phil Jr.  You gave up your spleen for us - thanks.  But nonproduction and putting you in the stable only works in horse racing.  We are in need of a RB and there are alot of retired/ available backs out there that could be had without giving up a draft pick.  Corey Dillion, Zach Crocket, Tiki might be lured to play with his brother.  There are alot of interesting concepts and Gruden and Allen are the madd scientists.  Good luck Buc’s - don’t give up a high draft pick - just yet.

ARE YOU CRAZY THE ONLY THING WE SHOULD CONSIDER THAT WAS IN OAKLAND WAS MOSS. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO HELP SOMEONES RETIREMENT FUND. WE HAVE NO LUCK WITH THIS IN THE PAST AND I DONT SEE IT PANNING OUT KNOW.

I’m not worried about the RB Pos.  It’s the LT position that concerns me. In the game against Indi’ we spent valuable resources from the offense’s attack scheme to shore up issues at LT. You do that and it’s not too hard for any team to cover our, hate to say it, inconsistent passing attack; too many dropped balls on key downs and at key moments in the game, and get pressure on Garcia.

With the above in mind, too many three and outs wears out even the greatest of defenses. I believe there were five strait three and outs at one point in the game.  Bottom line, if we are serious about winning any title this season we need to address this issue quickly. The band-aid mentioned above will only hurts us more as time goes on.

chris is goin to be the starter of this team in the future..garcia is a one or two year fix…i personal would lke us to try to get tatum bell….he is a proven back that can get the job done…but realistcally though most likely crockett will be the rb allen and gruden go after because his knowledge of the playbook…which isnt a bad thing knowing that we need help right now…darby needs to have a chance as well he had a good preseason and hes got speed…all we can do is wait and see what they think of….GO BUCS

Ok, I have seen this guy Tiki mentioned today. He seemed like he had his mind made up about retirement but we all know that part of it was Coughlin who he didn’t care for as a coach. So how cool it would be if they could write another childrens book telling about how they played that one last time together and won a Super Bowl.C’mon Ronde only you have the power to talk him into it.Somebody please send this one to Ronde, i’m sure somebody out there has his email….hint, hint. GO BUCS

If we can’t have Tiki….I was only dreaming out loud there of course. How about Corey Ivy as a running back? What do you guys think out there in blog land? He certianly has speed and talent and also fresh legs after not playing the first 4 weeks. I wonder if he ran the ball in college or high school, anybody know?
