Former Leto High and University of South Florida track star Damu Cherry registered her first major victory of the 2010 indoor season by taking first place in Saturday’s Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Cherry, a 2008 Olympian in the 100 hurdles, clocked a winning time of 8.00 seconds to place her among the world’s top 20 performances in the world this season for the event. She also faced some stiff competition in Saturday’s race, including Canada’s Perdita Felicien (second, 8.01) and fellow Americans Virginia Powell (third, 8.06) and Tiffany Ofili (fourth, 8.09).
The current world leader in the 60 hurdles is Canada’s Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, who ran 7.82 on Feb. 6 in an indoor meet in Stuttgart, Germany. At last week’s Jimmy Carnes indoor meet in Gainesville, Cherry won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.47.
